Dr. Ashish Joshi, Senior Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs and Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, will be leaving CUNY SPH this summer to assume his new role as dean at the University of Memphis School of Public Health.

Dr. Joshi played a crucial role in the establishment of CUNY SPH as an independent graduate school within the City University of New York system, where he demonstrated great success in expanding and enhancing the breadth and quality of student-related services and founding the school’s Master of Science program in Population Health Informatics. In his capacity as senior associate dean, Dr. Joshi created a reliable and streamlined system geared towards academic excellence. His relationship with deans, department chairs, faculty, students, and staff have earned him the respect and affection of the CUNY SPH community.

“I’m grateful for the opportunities that CUNY SPH has afforded me to develop the scope and quality of the programs the school offers,” says Dr. Joshi. “I’m excited to utilize what I’ve learned here to help the University of Memphis produce the next generation of interdisciplinary public health leaders standing on a platform of equity and social justice.”

In addition to his administrative achievements, Dr. Joshi has continued to pursue his passion for research, scholarly work, and innovative and entrepreneurial initiatives. He is principal investigator and co-investigator on several research projects funded by the city, state, National Institutes of Health, and other international foundations and scientific agencies.

He has participated in multiple global health projects and successfully implemented nearly two dozen health technological interventions in the areas of population surveillance, m-health interventions, consumer health informatics, and population health dashboards globally.

Joshi conceptualized the SMAART (Sustainable, Multisector, Accessible, Affordable, Reimbursable and Tailored) model using combined principles of the human-centered approach to humanistic, behavioral, learning, and information processing theory to advance the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. He has presented his work at the World Health Organization, United Nations, and several other government agencies worldwide.

“Dr. Joshi has been an integral partner to me in the establishment of the independent CUNY SPH,” says Dean Ayman El-Mohandes. “He has left a profound mark on the school. His very high level of competence, dedication to excellence, and devotion to our students and faculty have been instrumental to our success. We at CUNY SPH wish him all the best in this next chapter of his career. I know he will make significant contributions to the School of Public Health at Memphis University and take it to the next level of success and efficacy.”

Dr. Joshi’s last day will be July 31, 2022; the senior leadership of the school will be sharing a transitional plan. CUNY SPH will conduct a national search for its next senior associate dean for academic and student affairs.
