POSITION: HxH Lab Summer Scholar 
ORGANIZATION: NYU Health x Housing Lab – Department of Population Health

NYU Grossman School of Medicine

The Health x Housing Lab in the Department of Population Health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine aims to serve as a trusted broker of evidence-based information and guidance for initiatives, practice, and policy sitting at the intersection of health and housing. The Lab will focus on three key activities: 1) conducting research to build the evidence base for initiatives, programs, and policies at the intersection of housing and health; 2) offering evidence-based advice to inform policy and other interventions related to health and housing; and, 3) providing education to expand the reach of practice-relevant evidence on health and housing. The Health x Housing Lab has a specific focus on homelessness, but its work also encompasses housing instability, quality, supply, and affordability issues. The Lab’s work is shaped by an Advisory Committee that includes people with lived experience of homelessness and/or housing instability, as well as other relevant stakeholders.

The Health x Housing Lab is seeking a Summer Scholar (Student Intern) for a 10 week, full-time experience in the summer of 2022. This is a paid position. The goal of the HxH Lab Summer Scholars Program is to build a pipeline and foster the career development of individuals dedicated to future work at the intersection of health and housing. The HxH Lab Summer Scholar will contribute to ongoing HxH Lab research projects, participate in seminars and Advisory Committee meetings, and have opportunities for career development related to research, housing policy, and health. 

Additionally, we hope (though at the moment cannot guarantee) that the Summer Scholar will be paired with an individual who has lived expertise of homelessness and/or housing instability, to engage in bidirectional learning and exchange of ideas, which will possibly result in a partnered research or other project or project proposal.

POSITION: DOL CEO Summer Fellowship

Department of Labor’s Chief Evaluation Office (CEO) is seeking curious, innovative individuals to join our office for our inaugural Summer Fellowship Program. The Summer Fellowship Program will support up to five Ph.D.s (current, advanced students or recent graduates) for a paid, full-time experience for 10 weeks (from June 13, 2022, to August 12, 2022).

CEO Summer Fellows will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience related to labor and evaluation or data analytics research, gain exposure to the working of DOL’s agencies, and complete and present an independent research project on a topic relevant to their dissertation or determined in collaboration with CEO.

POSITION: AMA-SHLI Medical Justice in Advocacy Fellowship
ORGANIZATION: American Medical Association & Satcher Health Leadership Institute

The fellowship is open to all physicians and residents who have a demonstrated interest in health equity and health advocacy. The fellowship runs from Sept. 2022–⁠Nov. 2023.

The inaugural Medical Justice in Advocacy Fellowship is a collaborative educational initiative to empower physician-led advocacy that advances equity and removes barriers to optimal health for marginalized people and communities.

The fellowship will mobilize physicians to be part of the next generation of advocacy leaders, driving meaningful policy and structural changes that produce equity and justice in the communities they serve.

The AMA-SHLI Medical Justice in Advocacy Fellowship is a unique, first of its kind post-doctoral fellowship designed to enhance physicians’ advocacy leadership skills to improve health outcomes and advance health equity in the areas they serve or may serve.

Using an anti-racist, equity-centered learning framework, the fellowship will provide a mentoring and training platform that will equip participants with the foundational skills, tools and knowledge to engage in institutional and political health advocacy. This will involve exploring several critical topic areas, including:

  • Upstream (action-based) models of advocacy that address social and structural drivers of health
  • Structural, cultural, political, and historical analysis of the production of inequities
  • Sector and resource engagement required to improve community health and well-being

The implementation of the Medical Justice in Advocacy Fellowship aligns with the AMA’s strategic approach to collaborate with stakeholders to eliminate health inequities by pushing upstream and creating pathways for truth, reconciliation, and healing to remove obstacles in patient care. Under Morehouse School of Medicine’s vision of leading in the creation and advancement of health equity, SHLI aims to be the leading transformational force for health equity in policy, leadership development, and research.

POSITION: Research Assistant (Remote)
ORGANIZATION: Strong Children Wellness Medical Group

Hours per week: approx. 10 hours/week. We will prioritize applicants who can serve until June 2022. 

We are looking for a research assistant to help us build out our structure to fund our ability to take care of low-income kids and families. Multiple incentive programs for primary care practices exist to ensure that these practices are able to receive enhanced payments to support the additional costs for addressing psychosocially complex families who have unmet, mental health, physical health and social needs. SCW is a primary care practice network that creates practices within behavioral health and social service agencies to ensure that their clients can access primary care that is well integrated with their other needs.

The research assistant will support our leadership team to investigate the different quality incentive programs that are available for the many Medicaid managed care health plans in NYC. The RA will identify the requirements for participating in these plans and also what data will need to be collected to participate. The RA will support chart reviews to help to do data collection and create a database with our data to support participation in these plans. The RA role will consist of attending weekly team meetings and report progress throughout the week. Data organization includes working with our electronic health record, Athena Health.

Learning Objectives for this internship with Strong Children Wellness Medical Group, PLLC include:

  1. To determine special programs that exist within Medicaid to support healthcare for low-income individuals
  2. To understand the background about Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) is a tool used by more than 90 percent of U.S. health plans to measure performance on important dimensions of care and service
  3. To get skills in chart review for measuring quality of care and analysis of quality data

Interns will be able to earn course credit for their work and depending on performance will also have the opportunity to participate in manuscript development and conference presentations I

Qualifications:

  1. Be in good academic standing
  2. Must be available for at least 10 hours per week and willing to work until May 15, 2022). Shifts can be arranged to work with your class schedule.
  3. Have excellent communication skills and attention to detail, demonstrate flexibility, and possess strong teamwork skills
  4. Current MPH candidates preferred

Background

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations, and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of newcomer youth and their communities in New York City. The Education and Learning department provides year round programming working directly with youth, their parents and families, and their schools.

Scope Of Work

The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and social emotional learning classes. Field Trips are held on Fridays.

The Public Health Intern will work with the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy’s administrative staff to support COVID-19 mitigation measures among students, staff, and families. The Public Health Intern will play a pivotal role in the conduct of contact tracing, health data management, and procurement. They will support educational and operational initiatives within the Academy to do with public health and safety.

This is an unpaid internship opportunity.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop skills in data organization & management
  • Learn effective parent/caregiver outreach and engagement strategies
  • Develop strategies to communicate important public health messages across linguistic and cultural divides
  • Responsibilities
  • Complete all staff training, as well as participating in program meetings and staff development activities thereafter
  • Prior to the start of the Academy, support with data collection of Vaccine status for enrolled students
  • During the program, support with data collection & organization of Daily Health Screenings
  • Assist with preparation of educational materials for families around COVID Safety & Orientation to NYSA
  • Develop educational materials around COVID protocols and safety for NYSA families
  • Liase with members of the on-site interpretation team as well as IRC community interpreters to ensure outreach materials are translated into high incidence languages
  • Place and field calls from families & individuals on testing, isolation and quarantine related to COVID-19
  • Coordinate with NYSA staff around Contact Tracing needs & next steps
  • Point person for students who report exposure on their Daily Health Screening, or become symptomatic while at the program. Coordinate contact home & next steps to NYSA Instructional staff.
  • Support Operations team on procurement of COVID-19 mitigation supplies
  • Provide support to parents and caregivers, connecting them with teachers, the student support team or other Newcomer Youth Summer Academy personnel as needed
  • Assist in enrolling new students into the Academy in compliance with IRC policies and procedures

Qualifications

  • Minimum pursuing Bachelor’s degree in Public Health or related field
  • Comfort working with newcomer and immigrant adults from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills
  • Experience working with newcomer or immigrant students and families
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Reliable, responsible, and dedicated
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required. Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desirable (including Spanish, French, Pashto, Fulani, Wolof, Dari, Farsi, Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian, Mandingo, Haitian Creole, Nepali, Tigrinya, Mam, Garifuna)
  • Must be available for all training days and for the entire duration of the Academy
