The NY State Health Foundation (NYSHealth) has awarded a $235,623 grant for CUNY SPH to establish a student-driven campaign to promote healthier food environments at CUNY. The project is a collaboration between Healthy CUNY, the CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute, and the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Healthy CUNY Logo w TagThe student-led, faculty-supported campaign will seek to understand student needs and preferences, and develop a strategy to meet those needs. The project team will recruit and train students to design the campaign, engage the CUNY community, and secure meetings with key leadership.

“CUNY students tell us they want campus food to be healthy, affordable, and responsive to their needs,” said Dr. Chris Palmedo, principal investigator, and CUNY SPH clinical professor. “With this campaign, we will ask students what they want and then train student food policy leaders to help make it happen.”

Students will work collaboratively with administration, student government, individual colleges, and unions to identify ways to transform campuses into nutritional environments that support student health. The team will also build connections with the State University (SUNY) system to apply lessons learned to build a statewide movement.

“Our students are role models in their families and in their communities,” Dr. Palmedo said. “Our educational environments should support and nurture these future leaders in every way possible.”
