POSITION TITLE: Administrative & Policy Intern

Organization Description

Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) is a collaborative, patients’ needs-driven, non-profit drug research and development (R&D) organization that is developing new treatments for a range of neglected diseases (www.dndi.org). DNDi’s primary objective is to deliver 25 new treatments in our first 25 years to patients suffering from neglected tropical diseases (sleeping sickness, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, filarial infections, and mycetoma) and viral infections (pediatric HIV and hepatitis C).

After 15 years of sustained growth, DNDi has built a team of approximately 240 employees working across nine offices (Geneva, Rio de Janeiro, Kinshasa, Nairobi, New Delhi, Kuala Lumpur, New York, Tokyo, and Cape Town).

In 2008, DNDi opened an affiliate office in New York City to serve as the headquarters for DNDi North America. A registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, DNDi North America works to strengthen and expand scientific, policy advocacy, partner development, communications, and in particular fundraising efforts in the region to enhance DNDi’s global impact. The office operates under the direction of the DND  North America Board of Directors.

Position Description 

The Administrative & Policy intern will be a dynamic and organized self-starter. The role provides administrative and policy support to the Regional Executive Director.

Specific job responsibilities

Executive administration:

  • Maintain calendar and schedule meetings for the Regional Executive Director, as well as regular team meetings within DNDi NA
  • Maintain active links with other executive/office assistants and managers to maximize internal coordination and facilitate internal planning

Office management

  • Serve as the point of contact for DNDi NA in coordinating IT, videoconference, and telecommunications support as needed
  • Field calls made to the main office line, redirecting callers and/or taking note of key messages as needed

Policy support, special projects & events

  • Support DNDi NA policy-related objectives and special projects, including through facilitating outreach to Federal agencies, Congressional offices and committees, think tanks, academic groups, NGOs, etc.
  • Support the Regional Executive Director with policy research, preparation of meeting materials, and high-level meeting requests and scheduling
  • Ensure DNDi registration for and/or participation in key policy meetings (e.g., roundtables, civil society hearings, etc.)
  • Maintain charitable solicitation documentation and oversee renewals via Harbor Compliance for DNDi NA, together with the Senior Financial Control Manager
  • Provide logistical support for conferences and meetings (e.g., ASTMH), including attendee registration and tracking, technology needs, etc.

Board liaison

  • Schedule and assist with preparation and follow-up on DNDi NA Board of Directors meetings, including taking minutes, convening Board committee meetings, etc.
  • Support DNDi NA Board of Directors in its efforts to promote due diligence by liaising with legal counsel and drafting documents as needed, maintaining close coordination with the Regional Executive Director and Board Chair

Skill & Qualifications

Experience

  • Experience corresponding with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience working in an administrative role desired

Education

  • College Senior/Recent Graduate of University or equivalent

POSITION TITLE: Graduate Intern

ORGANIZATION: The New York Academy of Medicine-Center for Healthy Ageing

Organization Description

The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) tackles the barriers that prevent every individual from living a healthy life. NYAM generates the knowledge needed to change the systems that prevent people from accessing what they need to be healthy such as safe and affordable housing, healthy food, healthcare and more. Through its high-profile programming for the general public, focused symposia for health professionals, and its base of dedicated Fellows and Members, NYAM engages the minds and hearts of those who also value advancing health equity to maximize health for all.

Department Summary:

The Center for Healthy Aging convenes stakeholders, including older adults, service providers, government officials, researchers, and others, to develop and promote policy and practice change; supports data-driven planning and policy; provides strategic assistance for policy implementation; and contributes to the evidence base for healthy aging interventions.

Position Summary/Overview:

This position will provide the intern with practical experience in data collection, technical assistance, mapping, community engagement, long-term care infection control policies, and aging/healthcare policy analysis.

Healthy Aging projects include but are not limited to:

  • IMAGE:NYC, The Interactive Map of Aging; an open-source data visualization tool to display spatial and socio-demographic patterns and trends related to the aging population.
  • Age-friendly Neighborhoods; a consortium of local groups of older adults throughout NYC who meet regularly for peer networking and support and to share innovative practices around aging-in-place during COVID-19 and Age-friendly Boroughs; a partnership with the Manhattan and Brooklyn Borough President’s Offices to maximize the social, physical and economic participation of older borough residents.
  • Project ECHO’s National Nursing Home COVID-19 Action Network; a training program that brings together long-term care staff to collaboratively advance improvements in COVID-19 preparedness, safety and infection control. The weekly expert-led sessions combine short lectures with case-based presentations and discussions that encourage participants to learn from their peers.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outreach to city agencies, service providers and other data sources for updated information for IMAGE:NYC and the availability of virtual technical assistance.
  • Collect new and updated data and work closely with the CUNY Mapping Service to incorporate and format this data into the map. 
  • Provide ongoing technical assistance to community-based organizations (CBOs) and other map users.
  • Support the planning and facilitation of weekly Project ECHO training sessions for long-term care staff.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating the Center for Healthy Aging webpage and the Age-friendly Neighborhoods microsite.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • One year of experience working in a policy/research/public health setting (can include internships)
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS is strongly preferred
  • Interest in and understanding of health equity and public policy
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently and meet scheduled deadlines
  • Facility with data collection and integration
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required

Education and Experience:

Pursuing graduate degree in public health, public policy, public administration, social work, or a related field.

Additional Information:

$30 per hour, 12-16 hours per week, up to $12,000 over six months, starting in or around July 2021. This position reports to the Acting Director for the Center for Healthy Aging.

POSITION TITLE: Fall Intern

ORGANIZATION: CUNY Women’s Public Service Internship Program (in collaboration with the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government & Public Affairs)

Program Description: 

The City University of New York is pleased to offer a Fall internship opportunity in New York City for selected students. The Program will be coordinated by the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government & Public Affairs and designated officers at each of the City University’s colleges. The CUNY Women’s Public Service Internship Program will provide highly qualified students the opportunity to learn by doing with the offices of selected legislators working to benefit women and promote women’s issues in New York.

Applications and Deadlines:

Applications and all supporting materials must be submitted by July 22, 2020!  

Eligibility:

The Program is open to any student who has completed 30 credits by the Fall 2021 term.  Any major may apply, but students who wish to be considered should demonstrate an interest in public policy and women’s issues in New York.  Applicants must carry a 3.0 GPA, and must submit an unofficial transcript, resume, and 2 confidential faculty recommendation forms with their applications. Participants must also possess a valid Social Security Number or EIN— issued by the United States Social Security Administration.

Award:

CUNY will provide a $2,000 scholarship to each accepted student. The provision of scholarships is contingent upon funding. 

Academic Component and College Credit:

Selected participants will earn academic credit by enrolling in a seminar and internship course on their college campus.  All credit arrangements should be made prior to the first day of the internship program. Students applying should communicate with their Campus Faculty Coordinator prior to submission. Campus Faculty Coordinators for each campus can be identified on the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government and Public Affairs website.

Internship Placements:

Interns will serve up to 15 hours per week during weekday business hours for the duration of the fall semester.  Placements will be in the local offices of legislators at the city, state and national levels.
