POSITION: New York Organizer

ORGANIZATION: Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI)

The Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) is a racial justice and migrant rights organization which engages in education, advocacy, and cross-cultural alliance-building in order to strengthen a national movement to end racism, criminalization, and economic disenfranchisement in African American and Black immigrant communities. New York is a city shaped by the Great Migration, a historic hub for progressive movements and grassroots organizing and home to a rapidly growing and diverse population of West African, Latin American and Caribbean immigrants.  As a progressive leader in the fight for immigrant rights and racial justice,  BAJI has a number of initiatives that seek to mobilize and build power for Black communities in New York and the BAJI Organizing Committee.  

Position Description:

The BAJI New York City Organizer will be responsible for implementing the BAJI strategic plan in consultation with BAJI staff, BAJI Organizing Committee members, and strategic partners in New York City.  She/he/they will show leadership and commitment to BAJI guiding principles, framework, analysis and implementation methods.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in local, state, and regional immigrant rights and racial justice coalitions and campaigns
  • Coordinate local, state, and regional BAJI campaigns, events, public education, trainings and other activities
  • Recruit local BAJI Organizing Committee members and hold monthly Organizing Committee meetings
  • Outreach to, engage, educate and mobilize local Black immigrants, including youth, community leaders and directly impacted individuals 
  • Outreach to, engage, educate, and work alongside Black elected officials, Black leaders and Black grassroots organizers in support of immigrant rights, racial justice and human rights
  • Outreach to local, state, and regional immigrant rights organizations and leaders
  • Provide/facilitate education for migrant justice, racial justice, human rights, and labor groups about issues affecting Black immigrants and Black Americans
  • Engage in public speaking and facilitation of groups in support of BAJI’s mission and objectives
  • Perform administrative tasks and other duties as required by the position and as assigned

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of current immigration and racial justice issues, and local, state, and regional organizations and agencies

  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse staff and with diverse communities 
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience

POSITION: Policy Analyst

ORGANIZATION: The Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use Prevention, Care and Treatment (BADUPCT) in conjunction with The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. (RFMH)

The Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use Prevention, Care and Treatment (BADUPCT) in conjunction with The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. (RFMH) is seeking a full-time Policy Analyst to join our team. BADUPCT works to reduce morbidity and mortality related to alcohol and other drug use among New Yorkers. To accomplish this goal, BADUPCT contracts and oversees treatment, harm reduction, recovery and support services; develops policy; conducts and disseminates surveillance and epidemiology and program evaluation; develops and disseminates treatment and management guidelines; develops and implements public health initiatives; engages in public and provider outreach and education; and promotes community interagency collaboration.

Candidates must possess exceptional interpersonal and research skills; have strong working knowledge of the intersections between drug policy, criminal justice policy, and structural racism, and how policy reform can advance health equity, strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to read, interpret, and synthesize public health research, policy literature, and legislation, laws, and regulations for a variety of audiences; be a strategic thinker with interest in researching policies and practices that support public health solutions to overdose and reducing drug-related morbidity and mortality; and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Under the direction of the Director of Policy and Communications with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative, the Policy Analyst will perform the following tasks:

  • Assists with and conducts assigned research, literature reviews, investigations and analysis of federal, state, and local legislation and regulations to advance the health and well-being of people who use drugs.
  • Drafts legal and regulatory decision memos and recommends positions on proposed legislation or regulations.
  • Prepares policy briefs, reports, and position memos.
  • Prepares materials including talking points for the Assistant Commissioner and others for hearing testimony, briefings, and trainings.
  • Systematically tracks and summarizes state, local, and federal legislation and regulations relevant to the health of people who use drugs to keep Bureau staff informed of developments.
  • Tracks state and federal legislative agenda and summarizes key points and policy implications.
  • Stays abreast of developments in drug policy research and positions of key stakeholders and advocacy organizations.
  • Works with staff across the Bureau in helping to manage the transitions from research to policy development to program implementation.
  • Meets regularly with Policy unit staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental, or social science plus
  • One year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental, or social science plus
  • Three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above.
  • All candidates must have at least a master’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in “2” above.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience in at least two of the following areas:
    • Policy research in harm reduction
    • Alcohol Policy
    • Drug Policy
    • Criminal justice
    • Governmental or legislative affairs
  • Experience with communities most impacted by the overdose epidemic, the War on Drugs, and related laws and policies, especially with communities of color most impacted by the criminal justice system.

Reports to: Director of Programs and Evaluation

The Reproductive Health Access Project mobilizes, trains, and supports clinicians to make reproductive health care accessible to everyone in the United States. We connect, develop, and support clinicians to become effective leaders promoting reproductive freedom. We develop practical, evidence-based, patient-centered clinical tools and resources that set a clinical standard in the U.S. and are used widely around the world. Our clinical training programs develop primary care clinicians who provide, advocate for, and teach full-spectrum reproductive health care. Our technical assistance programs creatively address barriers to providing high-quality abortion, contraception, and management of early pregnancy loss care in primary care settings. Through our national organizing and mobilizing, we are building a movement to change the way reproductive health care is provided.

Role:

You are a critical team member providing logistical and programmatic support to the organization’s efforts to plan, implement, and evaluate effective strategies to expand access to abortion, contraception, and early pregnancy loss care. You provide support to the Clinical Committee to ensure the organization’s patient education, clinical tools, and resources are patient-centered and reflect the latest clinical evidence. You will have primary responsibility for maintaining the tools and resources on the organization’s website and will help ensure maximum usability. You also provide programmatic and logistical support to the Reproductive Health Care and Advocacy Fellowship. You are deeply detail-oriented, independent, and organized.

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

ORGANIZATIONAL LOGISTIC SUPPORT

  1. Maintain the organization’s website, particularly clinical landing pages, programmatic landing pages, and the home page.
  2. Coordinate the sale of all clinical tools and resources materials.
  3. Monitor potential conferences and abstract-submission opportunities that RHAP can participate in each year.

  5. Coordinate with the Network Organizer to submit appropriate educational workshop materials to CME and CNE accrediting bodies.

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE AND ADVOCACY FELLOWSHIP

  1. Coordinate logistics of annual Fellowship recruitment and selection.
  2. Review candidate applications for completion and fulfillment of requirements and invite candidates to schedule interviews.
  3. Vet and approve access to secure Fellowship recruitment webpage.
  4. Maintain and update Fellowship website and promotional materials.
  5. Provide logistical support for virtual seminars and any virtual or in-person meetings.
  6. Facilitate Fellow’s application to Leadership Training Academy.
  7. Assist with logistics of coordinating sites’ grants.

Work Hours & Compensation

This is a full-time, non-exempt remote position that involves travel at times. The salary is $48,000.  Benefits include 20 days of paid time off a year, 10 sick/personal days, 8 paid holidays, employer-covered health and dental insurance, health reimbursement and flexible spending accounts, life insurance, professional development, and retirement benefits. Start date: beginning of May.

POSITION: Part-time Head Nutrition Educator 

ORGANIZATION: New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Stellar Farmers Markets (FSM) team

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is seeking a highly motivated, energetic individual to join our Stellar Farmers Markets (SFM) team.

We are hiring a temporary, part-time Head Nutrition Educator to implement live virtual nutrition workshops (via Facebook Live and other virtual platforms, such as Zoom) and record nutrition videos from May-December 2021, 4 days per week. This role will also plan and facilitate team meetings, schedule virtual partner workshops, and may assist with additional coordination tasks, as needed.

This position is a great way to gain skills in public speaking, facilitation, community engagement, and virtual programming implementation and support. Strong preference will be given to applicants with previous SFM experience and applicants who are fluent in Spanish.
