There will be opportunity for the student to engage with our fellow state agencies and community partners. The fieldwork student will work closely with ODUH staff, primarily Michelle Logan, LMSW and Polly Faust, MPH, leaders of the Women Who Use Drugs Workgroup, to assist with public health initiatives to improve the health and lives of people who use drugs.

Project Description
The health clinic at Harlem United is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), which is a federally funded primary care provider dedicated to serving the community’s most vulnerable populations. While a barrier for all health providers, appointment no show rates tend to be higher at FQHCs. When a patient “no shows” for an appointment, the visit may not be able to be filled and billed for, the patient is more likely to come in as a walk-in appointment, and the overall clinic flow is disrupted.
This fieldwork project aims to assess our clients’ reasons for not attending scheduled primary care appointments in order to identify potential avenues for intervention in future, allowing the clinic to reduce walk-ins, optimize provider time, and increase overall revenue.
The fieldwork student would be responsible for:
- Conducting a literature review of no-show rates in Federally Qualified Health Centers
- Developing a brief survey tool and script to use for data collection
- Calling patients who missed an appointment to identify the primary reason they no-showed and recording responses in a data collection tool
- Analyzing the data to identify common no-show reasons, barriers to attending appointments as scheduled, trends and patterns in the data specific to reasons for missing appointments and demographics of the no show population, etc.
- Recommending strategies to minimize the no show rate among patients at the clinic
- Preparing the findings for presentation back to the Evaluation & Population Health team and other relevant stakeholders
Student Qualifications
- Experience or knowledge of conducting a literature review
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with various audiences
- Ability to work independently
- Basic qualitative and quantitative analysis skills
- Proficient in excel, knowledge of SPSS a plus
- Knowledge of survey design a plus
- Spanish/French language skills a plus
Application Instructions
- Interested students should submit their resume to Danielle Strauss (dstrauss@harlemunited.org) for consideration. Eligible candidates will be contacted for an interview.
