CUNY SPH welcomes Senior Scholar Michael Merson

Dr. Michael Merson

It is our pleasure and privilege to welcome Michael H. Merson as Senior Scholar at CUNY SPH effective January 4, 2021. Dr. Merson will bring his prodigious stature and expertise to help enhance our global public health research and training programs, grow international collaborations, and advise Dean El-Mohandes on academic global health issues and trends.

Dr. Merson is Wolfgang Joklik Professor of Global Health at Duke University. He was previously the founding director of the Duke Global Health Institute and the SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute, Vice President and Vice Provost for Global Affairs at Duke University, and Vice Chancellor for Duke-National University of Singapore, School of Medicine.

Dr. Merson served as director for the World Health Organization’s Diarrheal Diseases Control and Acute Respiratory Infections Programs and the WHO Global Program on AIDS. After WHO, he joined Yale University as its first Dean of Public Health and the Anna M. R. Lauder Professor of Public Health. He also served as Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS at Yale University.

Dr. Merson has authored nearly 200 articles, is the senior editor of the leading global health textbook Global Health: Disease, Programs, Systems, and Policies and co-author of The AIDS Pandemic: Searching for a Global Response which provides a history of the global response to AIDS. He has served in advisory capacities for UNAIDS, WHO, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, World Bank, World Economic Forum, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has two honorary degrees, and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

We look forward to working alongside Dr. Merson in the coming months to enrich global public health programming at CUNY SPH.
