Public and Global Health Track

Aging and Neurological Diseases Track
Through this track, students learn about three neurological conditions and diseases that often interplay with the aging process: stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia. Participants work in research labs and centers focused on these issues.

- A comprehensive orientation covering both the health-related issues and an introduction to research approaches. This ensures all participants have a useful level of background knowledge to supplement their research placement experience.
- Opportunities to build a social network with student peers, faculty, and staff.

STAR Program Description
Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI) supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Global Health (GH) Bureau. Description
The Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program (EGRP), Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), National Cancer Institute (NCI), has an opening for a Fellow with an interest in project management, evaluation, planning, coordination and analysis.
NCI is the primary federal agency responsible for cancer research and is part of NIH and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). EGRP manages a comprehensive program of grant-supported, population-based research on the determinants of cancer. This fellowship opportunity is with the Office of the Associate Director (OAD), which develops and implements the mission and scientific and strategic agenda of EGRP. The fellowship offers a rich learning experience that will afford the successful candidate the opportunity to work with teams of scientists and public health professionals at NCI, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and institutions around the country.
Position Description
The successful candidate will help coordinate, evaluate, and manage highly visible programmatic projects in the OAD and across EGRP. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: managing planning activities for major funded research initiatives in EGRP; preparing reports; supporting strategic planning efforts; maintenance of databases; coordinating the evaluation of the EGRP grant portfolio. The incumbent would also help manage, coordinate, and plan special projects with the Associate Director including help with preparing and organizing presentations and proposals, and conducting literature searches. Additional duties include participating in and assisting with EGRP-supported scientific meetings, webinars, and other project management tasks.
Qualifications
- Master’s-level degree in epidemiology, public health, biological sciences, public administration, business administration or other related fields strongly preferred; willing to consider candidates with a bachelor’s degree and several years of experience in public administration or business administration.
- A strong interest and excellent skills in project management.
- Experience reviewing, analyzing, and summarizing data.
- Excellent data management skills.
- Experience with coordinating or planning meetings desired, but not required.
- Excellent attention to detail and interpersonal, organizational, planning and writing skills.
- The ability to work independently and on teams.

Stipend and Benefits
The CRTA appointment is a one-year award, with the option to renew for an additional year. The starting salary is approximately $42,600 for a trainee with a relevant master’s degree. Salary is commensurate with experience and education. Health benefits and training opportunities are provided.

POSITION: Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities (INRO)

Description:
Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities (INRO) promotes biomedical research training in allergic, immunologic, or infectious diseases. Applicants for INRO should be talented senior-level undergraduate students, those who have recently completed a master’s degree, or those who are in their final year of a master’s degree program. Through INRO, the NIAID training office sponsors postbac trainees from U.S. populations underrepresented in the biomedical sciences and those dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion — as defined by Notice of NIH’s Interest in Diversity Notice(link is external). Individuals from underrepresented populations and/or disadvantaged backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to the promotion of diversity and inclusion in the biomedical sciences and be actively pursuing a postbaccalaureate (postbac) research training position – also called an Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) – in NIAID at the time of their INRO application.
If selected for INRO, students will have the opportunity to get to know the other candidates in their cohort and meet with prospective NIAID mentors, with the expectation that all students will join an NIAID lab and start their post-baccalaureate training on June 14, 2021. INRO students and NIAID investigators should be prepared to confirm a laboratory by March 1.

- Summer internships will take place June 1 – August 6, 2021. Academic year internships can be scheduled by host companies and students. All positions are paid (at least $15/hour).

POSITION: Population Health Program Intern (Fall/Winter 2020 – 2021)
ORGANIZATION: NYC Health + Hospitals, Lincoln
Overview:
New York City Health + Hospitals is the largest safety net health care system in the country and serves 1.3 million New Yorkers, nearly 400,000 of whom are uninsured. Lincoln is one the system’s acute care hospitals serving among others, residents of the South Bronx. The hospital carries out various initiatives and performance improvement projects to better the health of its patient population and the South Bronx community. These include projects to improve the management of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, address social determinants of health, use community health workers to make home visits to patients, and reduce avoidable emergency room visits and inpatient stays.
Internship Description:
We will assign the Program Interns to one of the following projects, based on interest and availability:
- Designing and implementing strategies to address high risk patients (those likely to have a large number of inpatient admissions and emergency room visits in a year)
- Improving health outcomes for patients with diabetes or hypertension, including by connecting patients to resources to address patients’ social needs (Spanish speaker needed)
Responsibilities include:
Interviewing staff and patients; attending meetings; conducting analysis of data; preparing charts and presentations; preparing tools such as work flows, posters, flyers, toolkits, flowcharts, and checklists; reviewing literature and best practice; other tasks as needed.
A minimum of 6 hours a week and 2 month commitment is required. Additional hours and a longer commitment is welcomed.

Skills and qualities needed:
