The CUNY Center for Systems and Community Design (CSCD) is hiring a full-time Research Scientist / Postdoctoral Research Associate with experience in systems dynamics modeling. The mission of CSCD is to create healthy communities through the development and testing of innovative strategies for systems change.
Position Description:
The Research Scientist/ Postdoctoral Research Associate will serve as a systems modeler for the CUNY SPH team. The role of the systems modeler will be to support participatory group model building and computational system dynamics modeling in a variety of public health projects, including those that focus on the opioid epidemic, COVID-19, obesity, and mental health, among others. The systems modeler will also serve as a key liaison between the CUNY SPH team and research investigators at partner institutions.
The systems modeler will report directly to Dr. Terry Huang, Director and Professor of CSCD and Dr. Nasim Sabounchi, Research Associate Professor of CSCD.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Closely collaborate with Principal Investigators and research staff at CUNY and partner institutions
- Support the development and training of group model building teams
- Facilitate group model building sessions
- Assist with the development and interpretation of system dynamics models based on group model building sessions
- Assist with the preparation and implementation of data collection protocols
- Perform necessary analysis of quantitative and qualitative data
- Build computational system dynamics models in service of research projects
- Provide expertise on implementation science, systems thinking, and collective impact methods for diverse stakeholders of research collaboratives
- Assist in the interpretation of modeling outputs, development of recommendations, and design and prioritization of adaptive strategies in communities
- Prepare reports and manuscripts
- Attend and represent CSCD at network-wide meetings or other events related to the research collaborative
- Perform project-related administrative tasks
Other duties: The systems modeler must have excellent management, written, verbal, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills. CSCD is involved in a number of high-profile research projects with high-stakes deliverables and the systems modeler must have experience operating in this type of work environment.
Requirements:
- Minimum of a Master’s degree (Doctoral degree preferred)
- 2 years of training and experience in behavioral research settings with training/expertise in system dynamics modeling, group model building, systems science, public health and/or related field
- Proficiency with data management and analysis using standard statistical software
- Proficiency with system dynamics modeling software such as Vensim or Stella
- Ability to work independently and prioritize and handle multiple assignments
Applicants must be self-starters, highly motivated, and have exemplary abilities to multi-task. This position can be filled immediately, but the start date is flexible. The initial term of this position will be for one year, with the possibility of extension contingent on performance and funding. This position will be remote, with post-pandemic location to be determined in consultation with the center director and candidate.

Description:
The purpose of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Team within the COVID-19 California Department of Public Health (CDPH) response is to maintain and provide case-based surveillance and epidemiologic data for COVID-19 cases reported in the state of California. This team works to meet the demands for timely and highly visible surveillance data used by groups at CDPH as well as the California Department of Technology and the Governor’s Office to track and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. This team is responsible for accurately reporting cases of COVID-19 and required data elements to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in accordance with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists guidance.
The Epidemiologist functions within an incident command structure (ICS) as part of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Team and interacts with numerous CDPH programs, local health departments (LHDs), and CDC to perform essential functions.
Essential Functions:
- Clean data and maintain data quality and completeness.
- Analyze data as requested (e.g. to determine number and rate of COVID-19 cases, stratify data by jurisdiction, demographics, and key factors, monitor and assess for trend).
- Assist with the generation of data sets, data visualizations and written and oral reports.
- Coordinate and interact with state and local public health departments, laboratories, Communicable Disease (CD) Controllers and other health agencies.
- Establish and maintain standardized methods of data collection in the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE) or external electronic databases.
- Communicate effectively and efficiently with involved partners via telephone and email.
- Ensure that the needs of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Team are met, to the extent possible.
- Participate in conference calls with epidemiology and laboratory partners at CDPH, CDC, California LHDs, healthcare facilities, and other state and local health departments.
- Present at meetings, if applicable.
- Perform other duties as directed by the supervisor.

Job Qualifications:

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director of Surveillance, Monitoring, and Evaluation, reporting to the Assistant Commissioner of HPJIP, will lead a team dedicated to promoting the mental health, substance use, and physical health of justice-impacted populations by:
- Characterizing the behavioral, mental, and physical health of people with a history of justice involvement living in the community and of justice-impacted populations
- Identifying and monitoring behavioral, mental, and physical health disease trends

Based in East Harlem, two long-standing and well-regarded harm reduction organizations in New York City are seeking an Operations Manager. The non-profits, the process of completing a merger, are innovative organizations serving low-income people who use drugs and other marginalized individuals. The wide range of mobile and center-based services are delivered by upwards of 80 staff and peer workers, and include syringe access, overdose prevention, public health, care coordination, medical care, holistic, peer education, and advocacy services. The organizations have a combined $7 million budget made up of mainly government grants.
Position Summary:
The Drop In Center Manager (DICM) is a detail oriented and compassionate individual who cares about the wellbeing of every participant coming through NYHRE’s doors. The DICM demonstrates exceptional skills in working with marginalized population and shows reliable creativity and skills in de-escalation, management of people, and systems. The DICM works supervises the DIC team and works with the Clinic / HUB team to ensure that there is a calm flow of participants in the DIC and that every participant receives the services that they need in a timely fashion. Those services include harm reduction supplies (syringes, smoking kits, safer sex kits, narcan kits, etc), medical services, coffee, tea, food, bathroom, shower, laundry, and respite.

Key Responsibilities:
- Lead team of 10+ staff
- Supervise DIC staff’s work; provide regular supportive and concrete feedback to improve service provision

- Deescalate conflicts that occur in the DIC

- Ensure DIC is kept clean and organized
- Work with second floor staff to create communication system to ensure participants receive services in a timely manner

- Work with the Operations Manager to ensure maintenance and repairs in the DIC are completed in a timely manner
- Other tasks as necessary and identified by supervisor
Requirements and Experience:
- The DICM is someone with an active interest in harm reduction, syringe exchange, and/ or social justice as it pertains to individuals who use drugs or who engage in sex work.
- Lived experience in the areas of substance use, sex work, HIV and HCV prevention preferred.
- Extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of safer injection techniques and overdose prevention, HCV prevention and treatment a must. Knowledge of the Bronx and East Harlem IDU/ substance use communities preferred.
- Must be dedicated to advancing an agenda of equal rights and social justice for low income people who use drugs, especially women of color through activism and political participation.
- Must be committed to advancing an anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobic agenda.
- Must be an organized, self-motivated team-player, with strong interpersonal and communication skills, basic computer skills, and the ability and willingness to be hands-on and solve problems as they arise.
- Must be committed to the principles of Harm Reduction and to working with lowincome people who use drugs and who are sex workers.
