Professor Franklin Mirer has published a commentary on the evolution of the assessment of the carcinogenic potential and potency of formaldehyde in the April issue of Synergist, membership publication of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Formaldehyde is in play again because of a recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rule limiting emissions of formaldehyde from plywood and particle board building products. The commentary notes that political pressure from some members of Congress delayed acceptance of the association between formaldehyde exposure and leukemia, which had been observed in several studies.

The AIHA is the largest professional association of occupational hygiene practitioners in the US, with international membership. The Synergist is mailed monthly to the 12,000 members of the AIHA. Dr. Mirer authors a regular commentary on risk assessment issues under the title “Risky Business.”
