Join us for a book talk with Elena Schwolsky sharing insights from her memoir, Waking in Havana: A Memoir of AIDS and Healing in Cuba. Ms. Schwolsky, now retired from public health practice, chronicles her experience living in Havana and working at the AIDS Sanatorium in the mid-90s, caring for her husband who died of AIDS complications and working as a pediatric AIDS nurse in the U.S. She will be joined in conversation with Deborah Levine, Director of the CUNY SPH Harlem Health Initiative, and Claire Simon, co-founder of the Young Women of Color HIV/AIDS Coalition and Health Program Administrator for the New York State Department of Health. These trailblazers in the fight against HIV/AIDS will touch upon the contrasting responses of Cuba and the U.S. to the HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 pandemics.
