Recent CUNY SPH alum Sheila Desai was given the Carole Joffe and Stanley Henshaw Early Achievement in Social Science Research Award from the National Abortion Federation (NAF). The prestigious award honors an individual who recently completed their doctoral studies and has made exceptional contributions to generating abortion-related knowledge. This award was recently established by NAF and Dr. Desai is the inaugural recipient.

Desai graduated in 2019 with a DPH in Epidemiology. Her current work aims to improve abortion provision, access, and measurement, and adolescent sexual health in the United States. Her research also brings into focus the sexual and reproductive health of immigrants and Asian populations in the United States.

“I am grateful to NAF for this award and feel honored and humbled by this recognition,” Desai says. “As access to abortion becomes even more restricted across the U.S. and globe, research that centers the data and stories of those who need, have, and provide abortions is critical. I am eager to continue contributing to this work as I move forward in my career.”

Desai is currently a Senior Research Scientist at the Guttmacher Institute.
