Statement from Dean Ayman El-Mohandes on the SCOTUS ruling banning race-conscious college admissions

The front of the US Supreme Court building in Washington, DC.

Dear colleagues,

We are deeply disturbed by the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse decades of precedent and ban the use of race-conscious college admissions policies. This ruling is a major roadblock on the road to achieving equity in our nation.

Affirmative action in college admissions is an essential component to the remediation of long-standing discriminatory policies affecting students from marginalized racial and ethnic groups. Bans like this have also been shown to have adverse spillover effects on health risk behaviors. A 2019 study found that some health risk behaviors increased among racial and ethnic minority adolescents after exposure to state-level college affirmative action bans.

Although this ruling may hinder our efforts, it will not stop us from continuing to fulfill our mission to deliver quality education and training to those who have historically been excluded and to promote equity in New York City, the nation and beyond.

We will continue to provide updates on this matter as they become available.

With my very best,
Dean Ayman El-Mohandes
