POSITION: College Assistant (Part Time)
ORGANIZATION: CUNY SPH Office of Admissions

General Duties and Responsibilities
The Office of Admissions seeks a part-time College Assistant to provide clerical and customer support. The College Assistant reports to the Director of Admissions and will be responsible for:

  • Representing the school at recruitment events
  • Meeting with prospective students to answer questions about the application process and the school
  • Answering/transferring incoming calls 
  • Providing assistance to Admissions Office staff 
  • General office duties including photocopying, responding to inquiries, updating and maintaining recruitment materials
  • Assisting in setting up and organizing events
  • Assisting in managing social media presence

Maximum tenure for any employee in this hourly position is 1040 hours per year.  Must be willing to work evenings.  No weekend commitment required.

Qualification Requirements
Current CUNY SPH graduate student in an MPH or MS program. Excellent customer service, professional attitude and appearance. The selected individual will be a “student ambassador” who must be knowledgeable about the School’s programs and curriculum. Must be detail oriented and able to multi-task with strong communication skills. The candidate must also be proficient in Microsoft Office. Experience and knowledge in social media a plus.

POSITION: STEM Pedagogy Institute (SPI)
ORGANIZATION: CUNY Graduate Center

We are pleased to invite applications from CUNY faculty to participate in the 2022 STEM Pedagogy Institute (SPI) at the CUNY Graduate Center. Faculty from all disciplines who are teaching STEM-related courses may apply to become STEM Pedagogy Fellows (SPFs), where they will work with colleagues from across the CUNY system to develop, refine, and implement inclusive and employment-oriented strategies in their courses. The SPI will meet for three days in June 2022, and then regularly throughout the Fall 2022 semester.

30 selected SPFs—including 10 advanced doctoral students—will receive a $5000 stipend to support their participation, and will be placed into one of three cohorts working in the following areas: Community Science, Computational Methods in the Sciences, and Early Research Immersion.

POSITION: Research Assistant (Remote)
ORGANIZATION: Strong Children Wellness Medical Group

Hours per week: approx. 10 hours/week. We will prioritize applicants who can serve until June 2022. 

We are looking for a research assistant to help us build out our structure to fund our ability to take care of low-income kids and families. Multiple incentive programs for primary care practices exist to ensure that these practices are able to receive enhanced payments to support the additional costs for addressing psychosocially complex families who have unmet, mental health, physical health and social needs. SCW is a primary care practice network that creates practices within behavioral health and social service agencies to ensure that their clients can access primary care that is well integrated with their other needs.

The research assistant will support our leadership team to investigate the different quality incentive programs that are available for the many Medicaid managed care health plans in NYC. The RA will identify the requirements for participating in these plans and also what data will need to be collected to participate. The RA will support chart reviews to help to do data collection and create a database with our data to support participation in these plans. The RA role will consist of attending weekly team meetings and report progress throughout the week. Data organization includes working with our electronic health record, Athena Health.

Learning Objectives for this internship with Strong Children Wellness Medical Group, PLLC include:

1) To determine special programs that exist within Medicaid to support healthcare for low- income individuals
2) To understand the background about Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) is a tool used by more than 90 percent of U.S. health plans to measure performance on important dimensions of care and service
3) To get skills in chart review for measuring quality of care and analysis of quality data.

Interns will be able to earn course credit for their work and depending on performance will also have the opportunity to participate in manuscript development and conference presentations.

Qualifications:

  1. Be in good academic standing
  2. Must be available for at least 10 hours per week and willing to work until May 15, 2022). Shifts can be arranged to work with your class schedule.
  3. Have excellent communication skills and attention to detail, demonstrate flexibility, and possess strong teamwork skills
  4. Current MPH candidates preferred
  5. Completed coursework in health economics and/or Medicaid preferred but not required.

POSITION: Editorial Assistant
ORGANIZATION: New Solutions: A Journal of Environmental and Occupational Health Policy

New Solutions: A Journal of Environmental and Occupational Health Policy seeks an editorial assistant to work between 10 and 20 hours per week (depending on experience, and expertise  and workflow during production cycles,). New Solutions is a quarterly peer-reviewed journal published by SAGE Publications. It has a progressive approach to health, work, and the environment and its contributors are scientists and policy-makers in academia and government, unionists on the shop floor, environmentalists in their many habitats, and advocates and activists on the streets. In recognition of the globalization of environmental public health problems, the Journal strives for an international focus and seeks to publish articles of occupational and environmental health with workers and communities uppermost in mind. The journal is strengthening its longstanding emphasis on work environment and environmental justice. The journal supports qualitative research and attention to policy considerations to address climate crisis impacts on environmental and occupational health and safety.

The editorial assistant position is ideal for graduate students who have policy interests in occupational or environmental health or others with experience in those areas. Experience with social justice networks and organizations is also desirable. The assistant editor will coordinate with one or two members of the journal’s Editorial Team and be responsible for the following activities, depending on expertise, interest, and available time.

Primary duties

  • Work in the Scholar One web application that SAGE uses to manage submission and review of manuscripts submitted for publication consideration.
  • Provide initial review of submitted manuscripts to ensure appropriateness for consideration. 
  • Assist with reviewer selection and invitation, with particular attention to a balanced review process that includes appropriate scientific and policy expertise and attention to health equality and social justice concerns.
  • Facilitate timely manuscript processing through the review process and assist editors to provide feedback to authors after reviews have been submitted.
  • Ensure authors properly format manuscripts and comply with citation/reference style.
  • Assist with journal outreach efforts via social media tools and to organizations.

Core qualifications

  • Academic training and/or work experience in the fields of environmental/occupational health, with an emphasis on policy/politics and research methods and familiarity with qualitative research approaches. Participation or familiarity with social justice movement organizations related to journal content. Demonstrated knowledge of research, policies, and politics in any combination of the following social justice arenas is preferred: work environment justice, environmental justice, labor movement, racial justice, immigrant rights, climate justice, women’s rights and feminist analysis in all these arenas, and LGBTQ rights.
  • Facility with web-based applications for journal management. Competence in using MS Word (especially its formatting and review tools), Adobe Acrobat (full or Reader – and especially review tools). Competence with Excel is preferred. Competence with Facebook, Twitter, and other social media applications is preferred.
  • Competence with bibliographic management software applications such as Endnote is preferred.
  • Timely and responsible communications via email and telephone (voice) and provides sufficient notice about work availability/scheduling.
  • Communicates with authors, reviewers, and editorial team members in a courteous manner.
  • Competence with literature search tools and reviews that can facilitate identification of appropriate manuscript reviewers (primarily through PubMed and other indexes and Google Scholar).

Wage rate: $20/hour. This is part-time work with no additional paid benefits. Flexibility in scheduling can be arranged for academic studies and other needs.

POSITION: Teen Battle Chef Instructor (Part-Time)
ORGANIZATION: Brooklyn High School

Brooklyn High School  is looking for a  Teen Battle Chef instructor – Training will be provided by FamilyCook Productions.

What: teach 2 sessions per week (approx. 3-5pm + 30 min set up/break down  on Wednesday and Thursdays. Same students both days. The curriculum is Teen Battle Chef plus Food 360 food career introduction and field trips.

It’s fun to teach and the kids get a lot out of it. It’s a for-credit class, so kids are incentivized to apply themselves.

Remuneration: approx. $55 an hour for 6-7 hours per week. The job is for the entire semester – e.g. through June.

The Office of Evaluation and Inspections (OEI) in New York is currently seeking candidates for unpaid full-time summer internships.

OEI is one component of the Office of Inspector General (https://oig.hhs.gov/) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The mission of OEI is to conduct national evaluations to provide HHS, Congress, and the public with timely, useful, and reliable information on significant issues.  

Specifically, these evaluations focus on preventing fraud, waste, or abuse and promoting economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in departmental programs.  Our evaluations present practical recommendations for improving program operations.  

The New York OEI office works on a number of areas including: the Medicare prescription drug program; accountable care organizations; access to care; food safety, as well a variety of payment and care issues related to nursing homes, hospices, and hospitals.  

The internship provides the rare opportunity for obtaining in-depth experience working with Federal government programs.  

Internship duties include conducting analysis of large and complex data sets, researching public policy issues, reviewing documentation, and drafting evaluation reports.  

Experience conducting data analysis in SAS is a plus.

POSITION: Population Health Science Scholars Program
ORGANIZATION: NYU Grossman School of Medicine

The Population Health Science Scholars Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine trains scholars to improve healthcare delivery for individuals and to advance population health science. Students graduate prepared for academic careers in health services research and leadership roles in healthcare delivery. The interdisciplinary program is based in the Departments of Population Health, Pediatrics, and Medicine.

The program has two tracks, predoctoral and postdoctoral. In the predoctoral track, students complete a PhD in one of the following programs at NYU Langone’s Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences: biostatistics, epidemiology, or systems and computational biomedicine. In the postdoctoral track, fellows complete NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s MS in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) degree.

It is supported by National Research Services Awards (T32 awards) from the Health Resources and Services Administration and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Training Experiences
As a Population Health Science Scholar, you gain the methodological skill, institutional savvy, and social capital to bridge the gap between ivory tower research and real-world healthcare delivery systems. You learn fundamental research skills, including identifying a research question, performing an effective literature search, choosing the appropriate study design, submitting to an institutional review board, collecting and analyzing data, and writing results for publication.

You are also exposed to operational and clinical aspects of healthcare delivery through optional rotations with key hospital operational groups, opportunities to join relevant committees, and discussions with healthcare leaders. Finally, you have the opportunity to engage in population health activities through collaboration with NYU Langone clinical or research programs involving local communities, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, or community-based organizations.

In addition to the specific training components described below, scholars participate in a range of activities that leverage the full range of backgrounds, expertise, and interests of our trainees and faculty. Activities include Meet the Professor Seminars about the work and careers of our training faculty, journal clubs that explore core topics in healthcare delivery science, and training sessions in our data and library resources. Trainees also participate in monthly group meetings with program directors and a weekly Integrative Seminar to present research in progress for peer review, which is co-led by the three program directors.

Eligibility
The program is open to physicians, nurse practitioners, or PhD graduates with prior relevant training in clinical medicine, health services research, behavioral health, health psychology, health economics, health policy, engineering, informatics, or computer science. Candidates who have MD, DO, DDS, or DMD degrees must have graduated from an accredited institution, completed an accredited clinical residency program, and be board-eligible or -certified. Candidates with PhD degrees must have graduated from an accredited institution. Nurse practitioners must have completed master’s degree training and at least two years of clinical experience.

The Public Health/Preventive Medicine Residency Program at the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) is currently recruiting candidates for July 2022. We welcome residents and fellows who are interested in and passionate about population-based health.

For over half a century, the NYC DOHMH Program has provided trainees a unique learning opportunity at one of the largest public health departments in the United States. This two-year program combines applied public health field experience with studies toward the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. Graduates of the program practice in both clinical and non-clinical capacities in a variety of settings, including governmental and non-governmental agencies, academics, private industry, and the non-profit sector.

POSITION: Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Harvard Translational Research in Aging Training Program
ORGANIZATION: Marcus Institute for Aging Research

Position Summary: 
Opportunity for a post-doctoral candidate to conduct independent research, under co-mentorship of  Harvard Medical School and Brown University faculty, in several ongoing large cohort studies. This is an ideal opportunity for independent research using state-of-the-art outcome measures under the mentorship of renowned senior investigators. PhD or MD required with an academic background in geriatric medicine, internal medicine, gerontology, psychiatry, neurology, neuropsychology, cognitive disorders, or epidemiology. The fellow will be involved in developing analytic tools, conducting analysis, and preparing manuscripts. Candidates should have prior training in epidemiological and biostatistical techniques. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required to interact with a large research team including senior scientists, data managers, and biostatisticians.

  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings and Center group activities.
  • Present work at internal and external seminars and national/international conferences.
  • Contribute to identifying potential funding sources and making applications to support future research funding.
  • Lead or participate in the supervision and training of junior research staff, postgraduate students, and/or technical staff. 
  • Establish and maintain an expert reputation and track record of publications in field/discipline.
  • Contribute to the development of new ideas or approaches supportive of the Center’s mission to elucidate mechanisms and develop and test strategies for the prevention or abatement of delirium, dementia, and other cognitive brain disorders related to aging.

Qualifications 

  • MD or PhD degree received within the last 5 years

  • Knowledge of quantitative methods in epidemiology 
  • Some prior research experience
  • Computer literacy required (e.g., Windows, Word, Excel).
