POSITION: Part Time Advanced Math Assistant

The Office of Accessibility Services at John Jay College is seeking a part-time Advanced Math Assistant for MAT-151 Calculus I. In this course, the first in the calculus sequence, differential calculus is investigated, and integral calculus is introduced.

An Advanced Math Assistant is an important service that assist students. POSITION: Communications Coordinator 
ORGANIZATION: African Services Committee (ASC) 

Position Summary: African Services Committee (ASC) is seeking a Communications Coordinator to be based at our office in New York City. The Communications Coordinator will work closely with the Communications Director to ensure that all communications activities are integrated to support ASC’s (1) fundraising campaigns; (2) advocacy initiatives; and (3) health, housing, legal, educational, and social service programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the production, development, design, and launch of ASC’s new website
  • Conduct interviews to write success stories and profiles for the website, social media, and newsletters
  • Liaise with Community Health Workers and other ASC staff to bolster client recruitment through communications activities
  • Support the administration of ASC’s webinar series
  • Research a landscape analysis of publications and journalists to engage
  • Pitch innovative and creative ideas for paid advertising
  • Contribute to the monthly reporting of analytics on ASC’s communications activities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Experience and Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in African Studies, Public Health, Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or other relevant field
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of the public health and human rights landscape, including the issues, stakeholders, and clients
  • Proven planning and organizational skills and ability to work to tight deadlines and juggle multiple tasks
  • Excellent oral, written communication, and presentation skills. Spoken and written fluency required in English; Fluency or advanced proficiency in French, Spanish, or Wolof preferred but not required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work efficiently and effectively with both internal and external partners in a multicultural environment
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to use standard technology packages such as Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office Suite

POSITION: Communications Intern 
ORGANIZATION: NYC Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit (PEU) 

About PEU

The City of New York’s Public Engagement Unit (PEU) was created in 2015 to serve New Yorkers in historically underserved neighborhoods and connect them to key City services, using innovative methods of proactive outreach. PEU’s model has proven particularly critical in the midst of the global pandemic, a severe economic crisis, and now a challenging recovery. By combining proactive outreach, long term case management, and an interagency approach, PEU breaks down bureaucratic barriers to better serve those who are struggling with a range of hardships – from landlord harassment, homelessness, housing insecurity and eviction, to lack of health insurance, food insecurity, and much more. 

PEU’s programs are delivered by four outreach teams:

  • DemocracyNYC: Helps increase participation in elections and strengthen ties to government.
  • GetCoveredNYC: Helps enroll New Yorkers in health insurance, including low- and no-cost coverage.
  • Home Support Unit: Helps New Yorkers in homeless shelters find and move into permanent, stable housing.
  • Tenant Support Unit: Helps keep tenants secure in their homes by connecting them to rent freeze and homeowner tax exemption programs, anti-eviction and repair resources, and access to NYC’s Right to Counsel program.

In addition to helping New Yorkers every day through core programs, PEU has been front and center of vital COVID-19 and Hurricane Ida recovery and relief efforts.

Job Description

PEU communications interns will work 25 hours per week and receive ongoing training in order to assist PEU’s Communications Director and PEU’s outreach teams, while building professional skills. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Scanning and compiling daily media reports for stories relevant to PEU’s core work
  • Drafting social media content for PEU channels
  • Creating social media toolkits for agency and community partners
  • Designing social media graphics and flyers to be distributed by PEU outreach teams
  • Generating and revising copy for websites when needed
  • Supporting the development of press releases, statements, advisories, columns, op-eds, talking points, and internal briefings
  • Tracking and circulating relevant news clips to various PEU team members
  • Supporting the Communications Director, Senior Advisor for Communications, Chief of Staff, and Deputy Chief of Staff
  • Entering, tracking and analyzing data
  • Working with translators on content translation and proofreading
  • Joining team meetings and program planning sessions
  • Supporting outreach efforts to New Yorkers through remote outreach tactics, including peer-to-peer texting, phone-banking and relational organizing
  • Assisting staff with special projects

Qualifications

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment
  • Willingness to learn, adapt and problem solver
  • Experience with social media in a professional setting is an asset
  • Graphic design, video, or photography experience is a plus, but not required for this experience

POSITION: Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement (RISE) Fellowship Program
ORGANIZATION: The Kennedy Krieger Foundation

The Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement (Ferguson RISE) Fellowship is a 9-week summer program for students currently enrolled full-time in a medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary, public health, allied health, or social sciences graduate programs who are interested in conducting research in the areas of infectious diseases and/or health disparities.  Students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale. Fellows receive mentored research and professional development experiences at the CDC in Atlanta, GA or in Baltimore at Kennedy Krieger Institute, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Bloomberg School of Public Health, or the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Fellows increase professional leadership skills and are supported to present their research at national meetings. Please note expanded eligibility now accepting programs in Allied Health & Social Sciences.

A $5,382 stipend is provided for Kennedy Krieger Institute master level graduate fellows and CDC fellows. A $7,314 stipend is provided for Kennedy Krieger Institute pre-doctoral graduate fellows.  Housing and round-trip travel is available for out-of-state participants.

The Excellence in Mentorship of UnderRepresented Groups (EMURG) for Health Equity Leaders Fellowship Program is a 12-month fellowship program that supports federal public health careers and professional development to address health disparities. This program provides students in a Master’s degree or Doctoral program, with a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale, with placement in one of the Department of Health and Human Services Agencies. The EMURG program will help increase the fellow’s understanding of and ability to address the social and political determinants of health disparities through ongoing learning and mentorship experiences.

A stipend is provided by Kennedy Krieger Institute and is based on federal rates for academic level.  Housing and round-trip travel is available for out-of-state participants.

The Public Health/Preventive Medicine Residency Program at the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) is currently recruiting candidates for July 2022. We welcome residents and fellows who are interested in and passionate about population-based health.

For over half a century, the NYC DOHMH Program has provided trainees a unique learning opportunity at one of the largest public health departments in the United States. This two-year program combines applied public health field experience with studies toward the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. Graduates of the program practice in both clinical and non-clinical capacities in a variety of settings, including governmental and non-governmental agencies, academics, private industry, and the non-profit sector. 

Our program seeks to recruit highly qualified applicants who have completed at least 1 year of clinical training, with preference given to those who have completed a full residency prior to applying to Preventive Medicine.  Candidates must also be eligible to apply for a New York State medical license.

Job Summary

Research!America is offering a paid, temporary fellowship with telework opportunity possible. Fellows assist the organization in advancing its mission and objectives through education, advocacy and public policy activities. The fellowship is a one-year appointment (start and end dates are flexible).

The science policy fellows will:  

  • Track relevant policy issues, including budget and appropriations legislation

POSITION: Postdoctoral Research Scientist
ORGANIZATION: Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health

The Department of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health invites applications from PhD or other doctoral-level degree holders for a postdoctoral position in puberty and menstrual health research.

Under the guidance of the Principal Investigator (Dr. Marni Sommer), the candidate will play an integral role on supporting the GATE Program’s menstrual health portfolio (US and global), disseminating puberty educational content to young people, and assessing the impact of menstrual health on the daily lives of those with periods.

The duration of this position is 12 months, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. Candidates from groups historically excluded from or underrepresented in research/academia are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Candidates should hold a doctoral-level degree in public health, social and behavioral sciences, education, epidemiology, or a related field. Strong quantitative skills (e.g., survey design and analyses) and a record of peer-reviewed publications are preferred qualifications.  Additionally, the candidate must have experience analyzing survey data using SAS or similar software programs, mixed methods research experience, demonstrated interest in adolescent health or women’s health, strong writing skills and proficient in statistical software packages (Stata, SAS, R or SPSS)
