Given the recent approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children ages five to 11, the Children’s COVID-19 Vaccine Equity Strategy Working Group, including Distinguished Lecturer Scott Ratzan, released a set of detailed recommendations for the equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to children of that age group.

The group makes targeted recommendations regarding vaccine distribution with a focus on racial health equity. They recommend that policymakers, insurers, hospitals, and other stakeholders conduct outreach in the context of whole families and communities, build on existing infrastructure, and engage all sectors across health policy, communities, schools, and the private sector.

One of the recommendations involves strategies to ensure that whole families are vaccinated.

“The authorization of the Pfizer COVID vaccine for children ages five to 11 is an important opportunity to step up communication and advance policies that bolster vaccination for community-level protection, especially in areas where we need to increase vaccination coverage among adult caregivers,” says Dr. Ratzan.
