HRTP: A Public Health Internship Program at the NYC Health Department is one of the oldest and largest public health traineeships in the country

For over 50 years, HRTP has provided the opportunity for undergraduate, graduate and professional school students to experience some of the real life challenges of public health. By working on current relevant public health issues under the close supervision and mentorship of experienced professionals, students apply classroom learning to practical problems in a closely matched practicum. In the process, they learn critical skills needed to excel in the field.

The goals of the program are:

  • To orient students to the principles and practices of public health planning, research, administration and evaluation.
  • To broaden students’ concept of public health by increasing their awareness of the needs, challenges and career opportunities in this field.
  • To assist the Health Department in recruiting skilled, professional candidates with proven potential.

During the summer, in addition to direct hands-on experience, interns are exposed to a rigorous curriculum of seminars, workshops, and other activities to broaden their understanding of how we promote the health of New Yorkers.

Sessions

HRTP operates in three sessions:

  • Summer Session: June–August
    Full-time: Maximum 35 hours per week
    Part-time: Minimum 20 hours per week
  • Fall Session*: September–December
    Part-time only: Between 10 and 20 hours per week
  • Winter/Spring*: January–May
    Part-time only: Between 10 and 20 hours per week

* This session is open to local students only. NYC residency is required.

Stipends

In many cases, financial support is available for HRTP students. HRTP does not provide funding for interns. It is the responsibility of the program to secure funding for their interns. Students who are unable to receive funding usually volunteer.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be enrolled as a matriculated undergraduate, graduate or professional student in a degree program at an accredited college or university in the U.S.
  • Recent graduates are ineligible.
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing (GPA above 3.0).
  • Residency in NYC is required for the fall and winter/spring sessions. There are no residency restrictions for the summer session.

  • To apply for a fall placement, you must submit your application between July 15 and August 15.

POSITION TITLE: Child Sex Trafficking Project Intern
ORGANIZATION: American Academy of Pediatrics

The child sex trafficking project intern position with the AAP-NY (American Academy of Pediatrics) is still available for interested CUNY SPH students, July 2021 to June 2022.

About Project E3: “Engage, Entrust, Elevate”

  • Funded by the World Childhood Foundation

Year 1 (2020-2021)

  • Create a case based training curriculum for pediatricians in improving recognition and response to child sex trafficking victims in NYC
  • Emphasis on care using a health and public health team lens, rather than law enforcement

Year 2 (2021-2022)

  • Pilot training with pediatric members of NYC based chapter in September 2021
  • Create simulated patient encounter videos, role modeling best practices in patient engagement into continuous health care
  • Emphasis is on care of marginalized vulnerable youth – LGBTQ, males, disabled

Looking for students with strong communication skills, verbal and written, relationship building with diverse community partners particularly youth, organization of educational materials, meetings, and calls, and interest in twitter, story telling, and other innovative use of media.  The student (s) will be working with 3 pediatricians with expertise in child abuse and mentorship.  The intern can be part of the project for the summer of 2021, with the option to continue for the remainder of the academic year.

POSITION TITLE: Post Doctoral Fellowship in Health Services Research 
ORGANIZATION: Department of Family and Community Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA

Organization Description

Thomas Jefferson University’s Department of Family and Community Medicine, part of Sidney Kimmel Medical College, is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join its growing interdisciplinary research team.  The fellow will receive a mentored research experience in preparation for a career in primary care health services research.

Founded in 1974, our department is one of the largest family medicine departments in the U.S. and is committed to research, educational and clinical excellence, with a particular emphasis on underserved populations. Our areas of research focus include primary care practice transformation, chronic disease management and epidemiology, medical education and training, and community health. Research funding sources include PCORI, HRSA, CDC, NIH, and numerous private funders.

Position Description 

Objectives:

  • To enhance content, methods, and grant-writing expertise in primary care research as both primary and co-investigator
  • To gain experience in mentoring students, residents, fellows, and faculty in research
  • To develop research dissemination skills including technical and scientific writing and presentation
  • To complete coursework for continued professional development
  • Activities:
  • Development of an individualized research and mentorship plan
  • Completion of at least one independent research project per yea
  • Participation in DFCM grant teams and providing support for unfunded projects
  • Participation in regular fellowship meetings with mentors and other research fellows
  • Participation in department research seminar, with at least two presentations per year
  • Presentation at one or more national meetings per year
  • 1-2 first-authored publications per year; additional publications as co-author
  • Completion of relevant coursework/training
  • Preparation and submission of a grant submission for a career development or equivalent award

The fellow will receive a stipend consistent with NIH post-doctoral fellowship standards, 25% protected time for individual research and development, research coordinator assistance, support to attend national research meetings annually and tuition/continuing education assistance.  The fellowship is a minimum of two years.

POSITION TITLE: Fall Intern
ORGANIZATION: CUNY Women’s Public Service Internship Program (in collaboration with the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government & Public Affairs)

Program Description: 

The City University of New York is pleased to offer a Fall internship opportunity in New York City for selected students. The Program will be coordinated by the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government & Public Affairs and designated officers at each of the City University’s colleges. The CUNY Women’s Public Service Internship Program will provide highly qualified students the opportunity to learn by doing with the offices of selected legislators working to benefit women and promote women’s issues in New York.

Applications and Deadlines:

Applications and all supporting materials must be submitted by July 22, 2020!  

Eligibility:

The Program is open to any student who has completed 30 credits by the Fall 2021 term.  Any major may apply, but students who wish to be considered should demonstrate an interest in public policy and women’s issues in New York.  Applicants must carry a 3.0 GPA, and must submit an unofficial transcript, resume, and 2 confidential faculty recommendation forms with their applications. Participants must also possess a valid Social Security Number or EIN— issued by the United States Social Security Administration.

Award:

CUNY will provide a $2,000 scholarship to each accepted student. The provision of scholarships is contingent upon funding. 

Academic Component and College Credit:

Selected participants will earn academic credit by enrolling in a seminar and internship course on their college campus.  All credit arrangements should be made prior to the first day of the internship program. Students applying should communicate with their Campus Faculty Coordinator prior to submission. Campus Faculty Coordinators for each campus can be identified on the Edward T. Rogowsky Internship Program in Government and Public Affairs website.

Internship Placements:

Interns will serve up to 15 hours per week during weekday business hours for the duration of the fall semester.  Placements will be in the local offices of legislators at the city, state and national levels.

Position Description

BronxWorks is hiring a volunteer Research Assistant for its Bronx PEACH Program

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the research assistant will provide administrative support to program manager and program staff in the administrative needs of the program and the team. Furthermore, candidate will be responsible for research duties including obtaining consent form and conducting assessment from eligible clients.

Reporting to the Program Manager, the ideal candidate will be responsible to perform a variety of programmatic, administrative, and clerical tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to articulate the mission, objectives of the PEACH program, (Promote Earned Income Tax Credit to Support At-Risk Children)
  • Answer phones and field all calls, delegate questions and issues to the necessary preparers or management.
  • Supporting the outreach team. 
  • Provide customer follow-up and other general office administrative duties as assigned.
  • Schedule appointments for clients
  • Assist PEACH clients as needed. 
  • Assist Program Manager in the reconciliation of management and grant reports on a monthly basis.
  • Assist with all database entry and report management.
  • Provide team with support obtaining consents and conducting assessments.
  • Help create and update client files. 
  • Provide general support to visitors and act as point of contact for program clients.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Graduate level – Public health student
  • A minimum of one to two years’ of prior work experience in programmatic, administrative and clerical tasks. Research based knowledge preferred.
  • Knowledge of office management systems and procedures.
  • Engaging “consumer service” personality and detailed orientated skills are essential.
  • Bi-lingual fluency in Spanish preferred.
  • Flexible schedule available, must work 18 hours a week. Some Saturdays required.
  • Strong oral and written communication, time management and organizational skills are necessary.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other standard business technology is required. 
  • CITI certificates required- Human Subject Research and Conflict of Interest
  • IRS Volunteer Standard of Conduct Certification required.
