POSITION TITLE: Legacy Intern

PROJECT NAME: Supporting participant engagement in public health and social services

Organization Description

Public Health Solutions provide a range of services to vulnerable New Yorkers across the five boroughs. We have long observed that lack of coordination between social services create confusion and increase of barriers to access, particularly for vulnerable New Yorkers. We are committed to implement a Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) strategy where clients are supported for the broad range of needs and priorities they have. From using SDOH screening tools to simply asking “What matters to you most now”, we seek to engage potential and existing recipients of services in conversations that can better define what best meet their needs. Our legacy internship partnership with the CUNY’s School of Public Health seek to support PHS in addressing this challenge. In 2020, the inaugural intern conducted a landscape analysis of tools currently used at PHS and led interviews with multiple PHS staff to elicit what the gaps were and formulate recommendations about addressing these gaps. In 2021, we are turning our attention to PHS clients to gain a better understanding of their priorities with regards to services coordination.

Position Description

The main activities of this internship will be focused on strengthening our understanding of client’s perceptions and priorities regarding coordination of SDOH services.

1) Brief desk literature review of appropriate best practices and client engagement strategies regarding coordination of social services aimed at addressing SDOH needs

2) Analyze data from existing client satisfaction survey and present results and key lessons learned

3) In collaboration with the Supervisor, develop and pilot a client-focused survey to:

* Deepen our understanding of client’s goals and expectations regarding service coordination

* Elicit information about social services coordination, what is needed, and what success is

4) Conduct the survey

5) Analyze and present results and recommendations.

In addition, the selected intern may be asked to actively collaborate on another related projects focused on client engagement and participation in the definition of quality. This may include 

6) Participating in other survey data collection and data analysis as requested

7) Conducting additional literature review

Student responsibilities and activities: With guidance and support from the supervisors, the student will be in charge of executing the work plan laid out in the activities above.

Skills & Qualifications

This practicum is ideal for students interested in translational or implementation science and passionate about equity and community engagement. Project management skills and interest in simple survey information with a mix of qualitative and quantitative elements. Ability to establish an excellent rapport with colleagues. Spanish preferred, but not required. Previous experience (even brief) working in social services preferred, but not required.

Final product(s)/deliverables: Survey results presentation and recommendation.

Position Description

BronxWorks is hiring a volunteer Research Assistant for its Bronx PEACH Program

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the research assistant will provide administrative support to program manager and program staff in the administrative needs of the program and the team. Furthermore, candidate will be responsible for research duties including obtaining consent form and conducting assessment from eligible clients.

Reporting to the Program Manager, the ideal candidate will be responsible to perform a variety of programmatic, administrative, and clerical tasks.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ability to articulate the mission, objectives of the PEACH program, (Promote Earned Income Tax Credit to Support At-Risk Children)
  • Answer phones and field all calls, delegate questions and issues to the necessary preparers or management.
  • Supporting the outreach team. 
  • Provide customer follow-up and other general office administrative duties as assigned.
  • Schedule appointments for clients
  • Assist PEACH clients as needed. 
  • Assist Program Manager in the reconciliation of management and grant reports on a monthly basis.
  • Assist with all database entry and report management.
  • Provide team with support obtaining consents and conducting assessments.
  • Help create and update client files. 
  • Provide general support to visitors and act as point of contact for program clients.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Graduate level – Public health student
  • A minimum of one to two years’ of prior work experience in programmatic, administrative and clerical tasks. Research based knowledge preferred.
  • Knowledge of office management systems and procedures.
  • Engaging “consumer service” personality and detailed orientated skills are essential.
  • Bi-lingual fluency in Spanish preferred.
  • Flexible schedule available, must work 18 hours a week. Some Saturdays required.
  • Strong oral and written communication, time management and organizational skills are necessary.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other standard business technology is required. 
  • CITI certificates required- Human Subject Research and Conflict of Interest
  • IRS Volunteer Standard of Conduct Certification required.

POSITION TITLE: Research Intern

PROJECT TITLE: Leveraging Social Networks to Increase COVID-19 Testing Uptake: A Comparison of Credible Messenger and Chain Referral Recruitment Approaches

LOCATION/JOB TYPE: New York, NY/Part-time

Study Description 

The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is currently seeking a qualified candidate to work as a volunteers Research Assistant on a project that will compare the ability of two social network strategies to reach those who use opioids and other substances in order to increase their uptake of onsite COVID-19 testing. This testing will be delivered in two community-based organizations located in New York City (South Bronx, Washington Heights, Lower East Side). This is not a remote position, the Research Assistant will be expected in the field – working out of both organizations.

Duties

Interns will be asked to screen potential participants, consent eligible participants for the study and conduct a structured 45-minute survey. We will provide training.

What to Expect 

This unpaid internship offers the opportunity to learn about the process of conducting a large-scale randomized control trial.  Interns will receive extensive training on interview and retention techniques and will have the opportunity to gain skills and experience related to in-depth interviewing, participant and tracking, and data collection. 

Time Commitment: One or two full days per week (10am – 5pm)

Department:  Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Qualifications 

Required:

  • Ability to commitment at least 1 full workday (10 am –5 pm) per week
  • Extremely organized and detail orientated
  • Able to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred:

  • Bachelors Degree in psychology, social work, public health or related field
  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s program   
  • Previous interviewing experience (but will train if no experience)

About AAPF’s Summer 2021 Fellowship Program

Position Description

The African American Policy Forum (AAPF) is seeking a team of highly motivated individuals for its Summer Fellowship Program! 

The AAPF Summer Fellowship is a nine-week remote fellowship starting Monday, June 21, 2021 and ending Friday, August 13, 2021. Applications from undergraduates, graduate and law students, and post-docs will be considered. Fellows will gain first-hand experience in non-profit think tank operations, gaining insight into community organizing, research, and policy analysis. Fellows will work full time (35-40 hrs/wk). Due to the remote nature of this opportunity, fellows must have their own computer and internet access. A stipend will be provided. 

AAPF’s 2021 Summer Fellowship Program is a project-based program committed to providing meaningful research and skills-based opportunities to dedicated individuals. Fellows will be assigned to specific AAPF campaigns and initiatives which can most benefit from their skill set and experience. Fellows will work closely with members of the AAPF team to advance work related to their assigned project(s). 

Duties and Responsibilities Include: 

  • Full participation in brainstorming sessions with the AAPF team;
  • Preparing communications such as memos, emails, newsletters, reports, and other correspondence;
  • Contributing to AAPF initiatives and campaigns through research, program planning, and/or digital media;
  • Assisting in the production of AAPF’s events, retreats, and outward-facing programming;

  • Basic proficiency in social media applications (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.);
  • Experience in multidisciplinary research;
