Associate Professor Dr. Ghada Soliman was awarded a grant from the Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) Seed Program at the CUNY Graduate Center to investigate a strategy to combat type 2 diabetes.
The interdisciplinary project is in collaboration with the Graduate Center ASRC faculty; Dr. Ye He, Director of the Live Imaging and Bioenergetics Cores at the ASRC and Co-Director of MALDI MS Imaging Core, and Dr. Rinat Abzalimov, Director of the Biological Mass Spectrometry Core at the ASRC.
In 2015, it was estimated that 30.3 million Americans had type 2 diabetes, and an additional 33.9 percent of US adults were prediabetic or insulin-resistant. In 2017, the estimated cost of diagnosed diabetes was $327 billion. The investigators will explore the role of a nutrient-sensing pathway termed the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
“Targeting mTOR-regulated glucose metabolism, metabolomics, and biological pathways enrichment is a promising strategy in the early detection and intervention in type 2 diabetes and obesity,” Dr. Soliman says.
