SUMMARY:URBAN FOOD POLICY FORUM: Ending Hunger and Food Insecurity in New York City and the Nation: What Role for SNAP? Lessons from the Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:This forum will examine the lessons learned about the role that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can play in ending food insecurity and hunger in New York City and the nation. Much of the public policy debate on reducing food insecurity in the time of the pandemic has focused on providing emergency relief to those with new or persistent food insecurity. But the dramatic expansion of SNAP also suggests opportunities for re-thinking how SNAP could promote food security beyond this or future crises. A panel of speakers will explore these lessons. \nGuest speakers: \nSameer M. Siddiqi\nPhD\, Associate Policy Researcher\, RAND Corporation \nSergio Mata-Cisneros\nDomestic Policy Analyst\, Bread for the World \nJan Poppendeieck\,PhD\nSenior Faculty Fellow and CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute\, Professor Emerita Sociology\, Hunter College \nModerator: \nNicholas Freudenberg\,\nDistinguished Professor of Public Health at CUNY SPH\, and Senior Faculty Fellow\, CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute \n
