SUMMARY:Migrants and asylum seekers: The solution to filling NYC’s health workforce gaps
DESCRIPTION:This webinar\, hosted by the NYC Pandemic Response Institute (PRI)\, in partnership with the Center for Immigrant\, Refugee and Global Health (CIRGH) at CUNY SPH and part of the CUNY SPH Dean’s Grand Rounds series\, will examine the opportunities presented by the flow of migrants and asylum seekers to address public health and healthcare workforce shortages in the health system. \nNew York State\, and many other jurisdictions\, have grappled with a shortage of nurses and other healthcare professionals since 2021. Nationally\, an estimated 80\,000 new hires are needed in order for state and local health departments to continue providing core public health services. Many of the 100\,000 migrants and asylum seekers who have arrived in New York City\, and the countless more arriving in other cities and states\, were trained professionals in their countries of origin.  \nPanelists will provide an overview of the migrant and asylum seeker experience\, the challenges they face and the government and civic response. They will present global\, national and local case studies illustrating effective approaches to engaging migrants and asylum seekers in the healthcare workforce. Panelists will speak on strategies ranging from adapting legislation\, to leveraging employment and other strategies that empower migrants and asylum seekers to work.  \n
