SUMMARY:Grand Rounds: A Public Health Approach to Violence
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Grand Rounds with Alex R. Piquero\, PhD \nDr. Piquero will apply a public health perspective to examine crime and violence\, particularly focusing on domestic and gun violence\, before\, during\, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Alexis R. Piquero serves as Acting Chair of Sociology and Criminology\, Professor in the Department of Sociology & Criminology and Arts & Sciences Distinguished Scholar at the University of Miami in Florida. He was appointed in June 2022 by former President Biden to serve as the Director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics. \nA leader in the field of criminology\, Dr. Piquero’s studies focus on the intersection of race/ethnicity and crime\, criminal justice policy and crime prevention\, and criminal careers; focusing on quantitative methodology. He has also studied domestic and gun violence during\, before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. \nIn 2019\, Dr. Piquero earned the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Bruce Smith\, Sr. award for his exceptional contributions in the field of criminal justice and in 2020 the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Division of Developmental & Life-Course Criminology of the American Society of Criminology. \nThis lecture will be held on the CUNY SPH campus\, but those who are unable to attend in person will be able to tune in to a livestream via Zoom. All those who wish to attend should RSVP. Virtual attendees will receive the livestream link after registering. \n\n\n\n
