SUMMARY:Epidemiology and Biostatistics Forum - February 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics presents the Epi-Bios Forum on the first Wednesday of every month. The Forum features a presentation by an invited speaker\, followed by a short presentation of research by an SPH student who is collaborating with a faculty member. \nLecture Topic\nThe Human immunodeficiency virus/Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) emerged 40 years ago\, and the ensuing HIV/AIDS pandemic shook the contemporary causal inference principles that\, at the time\, were so well established. In current times\, epidemiologists estimate that SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 will infect more people than HIV\, but kill fewer. Hopefully\, the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic will lead to an overhaul of the surveillance and survey systems\, which failed us in 2020\, allowing scientists to gather more accurate data to better inform strategies to combat this pandemic. \nKeynote Speaker\nDr. Alfredo Morabia\, Professor\nDepartment of Earth and Environmental Sciences\, Queens College \nAlfredo Morabia is a Swiss-American physician\, epidemiologist\, and historian of medicine. He is currently professor of epidemiology at the Barry Commoner Center for Health and the Environment at Queens College\, City University of New York. He is the Principal Investigator of the World Trade Center-Heart cohort study. He lectures and teaches on the history of epidemiology internationally in English\, French\, Spanish\, Portuguese\, and Italian. Alfredo Morabia also serves as the Editor in Chief of the American Journal of Public Health. Morabia is also editor of “Epidemiology in History” in the American Journal of Epidemiology and was supported by the National Library of Medicine to write about the history of epidemiology. \n
