SUMMARY:Do We Value Public Health? A call to action to invest in the public health workforce.
DESCRIPTION:Grand Rounds with Dean El-Mohandes\nAbout the panel\nThe need for public health services is increasing and resources are decreasing in an environment of pre-existing deficits. We need resources to support a trained and diverse public health workforce. We must also continue creating such a workforce and boosting morale so that it is ready to meet present and future public health needs. This event will explore strategies to develop a robust workforce pipeline\, including accelerated pathway programs\, deploying entry-level graduates\, and reduction of civil service barriers. \nThis panel\, moderated by Dean Ayman El-Mohandes and featuring NYS Assemblymembers Amy Paulin and Karines Reyes\, NYS Senator Gustavo Rivera\, NYS Senate Standing Committee on Higher Education Director Jan Dorman\, and NYC Councilmembers Lynn Schulman and Eric Dinowitz\, will discuss potential solutions for reimagining the public health workforce and explore how government\, schools of public health\, and individuals can partner and address these issues together. \nAbout the panelists\nAmy Paulin\nAssembly Member Amy Paulin has served the 88th New York State Assembly District (Scarsdale\, Edgemont\, Eastchester\, Bronxville\, Tuckahoe\, Pelham\, Pelham Manor\, and parts of New Rochelle and White Plains) since 2001. She chairs the Assembly Committee on Health and serves on the Committees on Rules and Education. \nKarines Reyes\nAssembly Member Karines Reyes has served the 87th New York State Assembly District (Parkchester\, West Farms\, Castle Hill\, & Westchester Sq.) since 2019. She chairs the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force and serves on the Committee on Health. She is also a registered nurse in the Oncology Department at Montefiore Einstein Hospital. \nGustavo Rivera\nState Senator Gustavo Rivera has represented the 33rd Senate District in the Bronx since 2010. The 33rd Senate District includes the neighborhoods of Kingsbridge Heights\, Fordham\, Belmont\, Riverdale\, Norwood\, Bedford Park\, Pelham Parkway\, Van Nest\, Morris Park\, and parts of Allerton in The Bronx. As the Chair of the New York State Senate’s Health Committee\, Senator Rivera’s goal is to collaborate with his colleagues\, stakeholders\, and constituents to improve health outcomes\, increase access to coverage\, and ensure a financially viable system for the 20 million New Yorkers he proudly serves. \nJan Dorman\nJan Dorman is the Director of the Senate Higher Education Committee chaired by State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky. \nLynn Schulman\nCity Council Member Lynn Schulman represents Forest Hills\, Kew Gardens\, Rego Park and Richmond Hill. She grew up in Forest Hills and is a long-time community and LGBTQ activist. An attorney by training\, Lynn has devoted her career to public service and held a broad range of executive positions in government\, private industry\, and the non-profit arena. She chairs the Committee on Health. \nEric Dinowitz\nCity Council Member Eric Dinowitz represents Bedford Park\, Kingsbridge\, Riverdale\, Norwood\, Van Cortlandt Village\, Wakefield\, and Woodlawn. He is a community activist\, former special education teacher and Chapter Leader for the United Federation of Teachers and former Aging Chair of Bronx Community Board 8. He chairs the Committee on Higher Education. \nAyman El-Mohandes\nDr. Ayman El-Mohandes has served as Dean of the City University of New York Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH) since 2013. He is a pediatrician and public health academic with a deep commitment to public service. He is also an established researcher in the field of infant mortality reduction in minority populations. Dr. El-Mohandes’ funded research focuses on population-based interventions in underserved communities both locally and globally. \n\nPlease note that this lecture will be held in-person and will be recorded.
