SUMMARY:Bystander Intervention to Stop Stigma Around Learning Differences
DESCRIPTION:This interactive training will teach you Right To Be’s 5Ds of bystander intervention methodology. We’ll start by talking about the types of stigma that people who learn differently—including those with specific learning disabilities (LD) like dyslexia\, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)—face right now using a tool we call the “spectrum of disrespect.” \nYou’ll learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities. We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract\, delegate\, document\, delay\, and direct; and what to consider when intervening. We’ll have time at the end for practice\, and you’ll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see stigma perpetuated around learning differences online or in person. \nAbout the Anti-Hate Initiative Workshop Series:\nCUNY SPH has been awarded a grant from the Chancellor’s Office to implement CUNY’s Anti‐Hate Initiative\, a virtual education series provided by Right To Be (formerly called Hollaback!). Right To Be is a social justice organization whose evidence-based training equips learners with a memorable and accessible toolkit on what to do in the face of negative behavior. \nPlease see the list of upcoming workshops below and mark your calendars: \n\nMay 1: Bystander Intervention to Stop Anti-Asian/American and Xenophobic Harassment\nMay 8: Bystander Intervention to Stop Anti-Semitic Hate and Harassment\n\n
