SUMMARY:Bi-directional learning in global health: Lessons from 20+ years of research
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Grand Rounds with Dr. Fred M. Ssewamala! \nReflecting on more than 20 years of funded research on poverty and economic strengthening\, Dr. Fred M. Ssewamala will share lessons on how a single idea can evolve from conceptualization into impactful international programs and policies\, with affected communities serving as true partners throughout the process. \nAbout the Speaker \nFred M. Ssewamala\, MSW\, PhD\, is the Constance and Martin Silver professor of poverty studies at the Silver School at New York University. He is also faculty director at the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research in addition to professor of population health at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. \nDr. Ssewamala leads innovative\, interdisciplinary research that informs\, develops\, tests\, and informstests economic empowerment combination interventions aimed at improving life chances and long-term developmental impacts for children\, adolescents\, and families impacted by health disparities and poverty in low-resource communities. \nCurrently\, Dr. Ssewamala is conducting ten large-scale\, NIH-funded longitudinal randomized control trials across sub-Saharan Africa. He also directs NIH funded training programs that focus on training early-career researchers committed to careers in child behavioral health. \nIn addition to leading his own projects\, he has also consulted for international development organizations including the World Bank in Nigeria\, Oxfam in East and Central Africa\, UNAIDS-Geneva\, USAID\, and ChildFund International. Among the successful programs based on his research is the DREAMS Project\, which is being implemented in ten African countries to prevent HIV among adolescent girls and young women. \nDr. Ssewamala’s scientific work has been published in over 230 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as American Journal of Public Health\, Journal of Adolescent Health\, Lancet\, Prevention Science\, PLOS ONE\, and Social Science and Medicine. \nThis lecture will be on the CUNY SPH campus\, but those who are unable to attend in person will be able to tune in to a livestream of the lecture via Zoom. All registrants should RSVP. Virtual attendees will receive the livestream link after registering. \n
