The Nutrition and Dietetic Internship program is the second of three steps needed to become a Registered Dietitian (RD).  The first is to complete the required course work in a Didactic Program in Dietetics(DPD). Then, after completing the internship, graduates are eligible to sit for the Registered Dietitian Exam

Further information about the education and training required to become credentialed as a Registered Dietitian / Registered Dietitian Nutritionist is available on the website of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Nutrition and Dietetic Internship Program Mission Statement

The mission of CUNY SPH Nutrition and Dietetic Internship is to prepare entry-level Registered Dietitian Nutritionists, in a collaborative and accessible environment, to provide nutrition care and services for the diverse populations of New York City, nationally, and around the world.

The Internship Program provides interdisciplinary practicum and didactic experiences that will prepare interns to attain entry-level competencies in nutrition therapy, food service systems management, community nutrition, and public health nutrition. Interns will develop ethical values consistent with professional health care and abide by codes of practice while practicing within diverse multi-ethnic urban communities.

The vision of the Internship is to provide access to supervised practice and the Registered Dietitian credentialing process for individuals entering the profession at a range of career points. This includes individuals starting as “traditional” interns, career changers, people already in the workforce seeking to enhance their roles, and those seeking to pursue advanced degrees.

The Internship program reflects the values of: food justice, sustainability, use of communications technology to promote nutrition, a global perspective on food, and culturally competent approaches to nutrition education.

The program’s mission, vision, and values encompass each of the domains of professional behavior. Provision of services and application of research, along with teaching, are the core mission of the SPH, which guides the program in Food and Nutrition in Public Health and the Dietetic Internship. Communication and application of knowledge are essential to the health promotion goals expressed in the mission of the CUNY SPH, as they are to becoming effective dietetic practitioners. Use and management of resources is key to the shared mission of engaging the public in an ongoing dialogue on public health policy, promoting health equity, and valuing socially and ecologically sustainable food systems. Competence, accountability, and quality of practice are emphasized throughout, and are the cornerstones of the mission to promote both basic competency and professional development in nutrition and dietetics practice in both traditional and emerging areas. The program’s mission, vision, and values are consistent with the education and training of exceptional Registered Dietitians.

The courses comprising the traditional track of the Nutrition and Dietetic Internship have been integrated into the curriculum for the Master of Public Health degree. This reflects the progression by ACEND and CDR towards entry level RD/RDNs being trained at the level of a Master’s degree. On-line (distance) track interns are encouraged to further develop their expertise in Public Health by completing the Certificate in Public Health, available on-line through the SPH, or to pursue Masters’ level education in their locale.

Additional details about the policies and practices of our dietetic internship can be found in the Internship Policy and Procedure Manual and the Intern Handbook
