Medgar Evers College 4+1

The CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH) and Medgar Evers College now offer an accelerated pipeline program to a master’s degree for students interested in a career in public health.

Medgar Evers College Logo

This program will allow Medgar Evers students to take up to 12 credits of graduate level courses at CUNY SPH during their junior and senior years, with courses counting for both undergraduate and graduate credits (depending on the student’s major and equivalency requirements) allowing for the completion of a bachelor’s degree from Medgar Evers College and a master of public health (MPH) or master of science (MS) degree from CUNY SPH in five years rather than six.

Use the links below to explore the available master’s programs and recommended course sequences for each track.

4+1 Program Information

Medgar Evers students in good standing who have:

  • completed 75 undergraduate credits or more (juniors)
  • maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher

Application is a two-step process.

Step 1: Apply internally

Initially, eligible Medgar Evers students will apply to the Medgar Evers 4+1 Admissions Committee with a personal statement. The Admissions Committee will also look up your transcript. The application deadline is December 1, 2021 for students wishing to start in the Spring 2022 semester, and February 15, 2022 for students withing to start in the Summer 2022 session.

Students who are accepted through this initial process will be eligible to begin taking graduate level courses at CUNY SPH in spring or summer via e-permit. Accepted students may earn up to 12 credits in graduate courses that will apply towards your master’s degree at CUNY SPH and may (depending on your major and equivalency requirements) also apply towards your Medgar Evers bachelor’s degree.

To remain in the program, you must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, have a declared major, maintain full-time undergraduate status, and earn a grade of B or better in your graduate coursework.

Step 2: After graduating from Medgar Evers

You will be provisionally admitted to CUNY SPH the following summer, and will not be required to complete an application in SOPHAS (which is a sort of CommonApp for schools of public health). The GRE is waived for all applicants except those applying to the Epidemiology and Biostatistics program. All other requirements will apply. Application fees will be waived by CUNY SPH.

CUNY SPH will waive your application fee. All CUNY SPH courses taken while the students are undergraduates will be e-permit courses. (Note: precise transfer equivalencies will be determined when applicable by the appropriate academic departments at the students’ home campuses.)

CUNY SPH courses taken while you are still a Medgar Evers student will be included in your Medgar Evers tuition waiver if they are applied to your undergraduate degree. For graduate courses that are not applied to the undergraduate degree, CUNY graduate tuition will be charged.

Students will be responsible for paying their CUNY SPH tuition after graduating from Medgar Evers (CUNY SPH does offer various financial aid opportunities).

Medgar Evers 4+1 Program FAQs

To apply, you need to be a Medgar Evers student with a declared major who is in good standing with a GPA of at least 3.5. If you are accepted into the program, you must be able to complete your remaining undergraduate degree requirements on schedule (by the end of your 8th undergraduate semester) while taking the required CUNY SPH courses according to the specified course sequences.

When you apply, you need to submit a 1-2 page statement of interest, and an unofficial (CUNYfirst) transcript.

The GRE requirement is waived for all applicants except those who pursue the MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics degree.

The usual CUNY SPH application fee of $135 will be waived for Lehman students.

The recommended course sequences detail what courses and sequence for each degree.

CUNY SPH holds classes at their Harlem campus (55 West 125th Street) and online.
