New grant awarded to Assistant Professor Karen Flórez

Dr. Karen Flórez, Assistant professor in the Department of Environmental, Occupational, and Geospatial Health Sciences received a three-year award of $461,616 from the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities for her study, Policy Impacts on Behavioral Health Disparities among Latinos.

This project is an extension of Dr. Flórez’s work health disparities among Latinos in the United States, and will allow her to extend her research beyond sociocultural factors and emphasize more readily factors that are amenable to policy interventions. “I am delighted that my research idea will contribute to the School’s mission and commitment to immigrant health by focusing on Latinos, a critically important subpopulation of immigrants in NYC and the country,” said Dr. Flórez.

This project will also provide Dr. Flórez an invaluable opportunity to generate preliminary evidence for another NIH grant application, which would represent an important step for her progress toward becoming an independent investigator in the area of health disparities.
