When should I arrive?
For security reasons, we want all students to arrive between 3:45pm and 4:15pm. ALL GRADUATES MUST PRESENT THEIR TICKET AND THEIR CUNY SPH ID CARD in order to enter the Apollo Theater. If you don’t have an SPH ID card, please see the instructions at the bottom of this page on how to get one.
Where do I enter?
As graduates, you will enter the Apollo Theater through the Stage Door on 126th Street between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and Frederick Douglass Boulevard. ALL GRADUATES MUST PRESENT THEIR TICKET AND THEIR CUNY SPH ID CARD to enter the Apollo Theater. If you don’t have an SPH ID card, please see the instructions at the bottom of this page on how to get one.
What should I tell my guests?
The Apollo will begin admitting guests at 4:15pm. Your guests will enter through the front doors of the Apollo Theater at 253 West 125th Street. Please note that Apollo Theater security has made it clear that ABSOLUTELY NO ONE WILL BE ADMITTED WITHOUT A TICKET. You are responsible for getting tickets to your guest and ensuring that they arrive with them. We have also been told that the Apollo Theater does not permit balloons, so please advise your guests not to bring them.
What will happen when I arrive?
You will be directed upstairs to the mezzanine level where all students will assemble in preparation for the procession into the Orchestra section of the Mainstage. Upon arrival at the mezzanine level, you will check in at the registration tables and collect your all-important name card and your commencement program. If you are not already wearing your regalia, you will put it on in the mezzanine. There are two bathrooms available in this area, and there will be staff waiting to assist you and answer any questions or concerns. (Commencement staff will be dressed in black and wearing bright turquoise lanyards with a name tag bearing their name and the word STAFF.) We will also have bottled water and Kind bars.
What should I wear?
All graduates must wear regalia. You may choose to arrive already “robed”, or you may decide to put on your cap, gown and hood upon arrival. Underneath your regalia you should wear cool, comfortable clothing. Comfortable shoes are a MUST. You will have to walk down a long flight of stairs before you enter the theater, and a short flight of stairs up to and down from the stage.
What about my stuff?
Please leave all personal items in the care of your guests. The Apollo Theater does not have the means to securely store your personal belongings during the ceremony.
What happens if I or my guests arrive late?
You will not be seated until after the Procession and the National Anthem have been completed. Late students will not be a part of the processional. If you arrive late, please enter the Apollo Theater through the main entrance at 253 West 125th Street. Late guests will be ushered into the theater at an appropriate time, so as not to interrupt the ongoing ceremony. Theater doors will close at 4:50pm.
Returning your regalia
Please check back soon for instructions on how to return your regalia.
What if I don’t have an SPH ID card?
