James Sherry, MD, PhD is Professor of Immigrant, Refugee and Global Health at the Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy at the City University of New York and serves as Director of the USAID Health Research and Applied Research Development Project (HEARD).
The USAID/HEARD supports multi-country implementation science collaborations, data liberation and evidence strengthening efforts. Dr. Sherry has substantive technical experience in reproductive, maternal, child and adolescent health and extensive policy, program and project design, implementation and evaluation experience in low- and middle- income countries. He has previously served Professor and Chair of the Department of Global Health at the George Washington University; Chief Science Officer at the US Department of State Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC); Director for Program Development and Coordination and Senior Advisor to the Executive Director at UNAIDS; Senior Advisor to the Executive Director of the World Food Program; Vice President of the Global Health Council; Chief of Health and Senior Advisor for Program Development at UNICEF/HQ; Director for Biomedical Research and Technology Development in USAID/India; and Chief of Staff for U.S. Congressman Sander Levin. Dr. Sherry is a licensed physician with doctorate degrees in medicine (University of Michigan), biochemistry (Carnegie-Mellon University) and clinical training in pediatrics (Children’s Hospital of Michigan).Dr. Sherry currently serves on the Board of Directors/Trustees of the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS); the Eurasia Medical Education Program of the Institute for Health Policy Analysis, and UNAIDS-USA; and the Alliance for Healthcare Competitiveness. He is also a Visiting Professor and Co-Chair of the International Advisory Board of the James P. Grant School of Public Health at the BRAC University School of Public Health in Bangladesh.
