Description

Graduates will draw from the theories and methods of multiple disciplines to lead, plan, manage, design, and evaluate community health interventions.

Admissions Requirements:

  • GRE scores
  • Three letters of recommendation (at least 1 should be an academic reference)
  • CV/Resume indicating at least three years of prior relevant teaching, research or programmatic work experience.
  • A personal statement (up to 1500 words)
  • Completion of a Masters of Public Health degree. Applicants with a Masters or higher level degree in another discipline will need to take five core Masters level public health courses. If accepted to the DPH program, three courses must be completed prior to enrollment and the remaining two within the first year of matriculation: Biostatistics; Epidemiology; Environmental Health; Social and Behavioral Health and; Health Policy and Management.
  • TOEFL scores are required if language of instruction for prior degrees was not English
  • Transcript evaluation – for all applicants with international transcripts. Must be from World Education Services (WES)


Additional Concentration Requirements
:
At least three Masters-level courses in social dimensions of health and two quantitative research courses (e.g., Biostatistics and Epidemiology).

Competencies

  • Draw on social science and behavioral theories to analyze the impact of class, race, ethnicity, gender, disability and sexual orientation on the health of individuals and communities
  • Assess community needs, assets and capacity to promote health
  • Apply quantitative and qualitative or, when appropriate, mixed methods to community health research and evaluation
  • Investigate through multidisciplinary methods the potential implications and impact of policies and politics in health, education, justice, housing, welfare, child and family services and other sectors on individual and community health
  • Develop and teach educational curricula on community health using theories and methods from the social sciences and public health disciplines

Four (4) advanced research methods or track-specific practice courses, of which one must be from a Graduate Center department outside of Public Health (DPH courses that are cross-listed with another program can count toward this requirement).
Practice Experience (3 credits) PUBH 896 Practicum Project
Examinations Students in all cohorts and all tracks take two examinations to test their mastery of the curriculum. Students must apply in advance to take each exam and students must be in good academic standing to apply. The First Exam is given after students have completed core coursework. Students work on the Second Exam after all required coursework has been completed except PUBH 816 and the dissertation (PUBH 900 & PUBH 898). Students cannot take PUBH 816 or begin their dissertation research until they have passed this exam.
